Coaching my Jr. Girls team on a trip to Arizona

I will admit I found the process of choosing a metaphor to be rather tricky. If I was going to highlight my masters work under a theme, it was important to me that theme or metaphor be something that was relevant to my day to day life, something that was very important to me and something that would fit well with the MET journey that I have now completed. Using those three criteria I set for my self as guidelines only the metaphor I could really consider would be something to do with basketball.

When I am not teaching or studying I am coaching basketball. For 11 months of the year, I am in the gym helping to develop young female players, through, training, practices, and games. This certainly means that basketball as the metaphor meets my first two criteria – it is part of my day to day, and there is not way I would spend that much time doing something if it was not important to me. Finally, I believe when organized correctly the basketball theme can also fit well with my MET journey. Both basketball and MET have several different elements which is why I chose to use the concept of a “Triple Threat.” When you are first passed a ball in a basketball game and have yet to use your dribble, you can do one of three things, dribble, shoot or pass, this is known as a triple threat.

I have organized all of my artifacts under one of those three headings. My written documents can be found in the dribble drills category, the multi-media projects are in the shooting skills category, and the group work that I was a part of is in the passing practice category. For an overview of how these pages relate to the metaphor and my MET experience please see their associated pages – listed at the top of the site. If you prefer a more chronological look at my MET journey please check out the Game Plan page. A third option for navigating my ePortfolio is to use the hashtags in the side bar to search for artifacts that might be of interest to you.

I also wanted to make a quick note about the “arena” or the digital platform I have chosen to use to show case my work. My ePortfolio is hosted on an Edublog site – this is a version of Word Press that sorts there information in Canada. The URL of my site might give away that while completely public it is connected to my school. Every student and most teachers have edublogs. We encourage the students to use them to show case their best work and create a positive digital footprint. If you are interested you can see their blogs here, they are also completely public. I wanted to use this platform because I was somewhat familiar with it, but mostly to gain first hand experience using it so that I can better support my students. The process of creating this ePortfolio has done wonders for my knowledge of the platform and my learning will be directly passed on to my students.

Finally if you would like to see how things have developed from the start of this process to the final product you are seeing today you are welcome to check out my proposal here – ETEC 590 – Graduating Project Proposal.

I hope you enjoy the game!
