Advertising Target Markets

Ikea’s ad “Start something New,” has various types of techniques that hook people into buying their product. These techniques include plain folk and transference. The old man is not a celebrity but a normal individual like the viewers that are watching the commercial.  This allows an individual to identify with that person and think about buying the product which in this case is a pink fold-up chair.   This is an example of the plain folk technique. The second technique used which is called transference is when the man goes on a huge adventure throughout the world.  It looks like a really fun thing to be doing which catches the attention of the audience and make them believe that if they were to buy this chair, it will help them enjoy this experience too.  It pulls them into the advertisement by using transference because it shows the visuals of the old man’s vacations and how much fun he is having.  The main audience that this specific commercial targets are adults which makes them think that this chair is special, and some people that are watching this commercial might think that they have a boring life compared to the adventure he embarks on.  A child would not know what was going on in the advertisement and may just think that this is a video with an old man in it and his pink chair. Overall this commercial gives people the impression that its not just an ordinary chair and that they should have it too.
