Writing types

DC Proudly Announces 'Represent!'; New Digital Comics from Underrepresented Voices | DC

a) In your own words, what are the four writing types?

The four types of writing include narrative, persuasive, descriptive, and expository. An example of someone using narrative writing is when they are telling a story from the character’s perspective. Someone using persuasive writing is making statements of why it’s bad for you or good. Descriptive is using lot of descriptive words like the desk felt really heavy and one thing it’s used in is poetry. Expository is when someone is explain steps to something like when you are looking at a textbook or recipes.

b) After reading the comic, “Represent,” by Christian Cooper, which writing type would this be categorized under?

The comic series Represent ” It’s a bird” by Christian Cooper shows us narrative, persuasive, and expository writing because there is a story being told by the author that is telling about a boy that is bird watching and sees the victims of racism. The author wants us to learn from this story that it’s bad to judge people by their skin color.

c) What is the comic showing us?

We should change how we act around black people and realize what we did was wrong. We should judge them by how they look and talk to them like what you would say to your family or friends not being rude like how the lady and the man talked harshly at Jules (the main character).

What is New Media?

New media

New media is an online way of communicating with someone on the internet. An example is someone using Facebook. The difference between traditional media and new media is that in traditional media a person doesn’t interact with someone like on the news or the radio. New media isn’t just Facebook or Twitter, it can be when people are on apps, when students need to email their teachers, etc.

Fragmented media consumption means the way a person consume their media time like someone using their phone to listen to music or just looking on Facebook or even texting their friend to tell them something important. People spend about 12 hours a day with those different types of media and those people tend to consume that media to support their existing views but it can tend to lead people to false beliefs which turns out bad for them. There is even some evidence that leads up to how people look at media. [“A recent study showed that on social media, fake news, defined as deliberately falsified news articles created to drive clicks, was shared over 35 million times during our most recent election cycle.”](Bedley 2017)

Try to see if the media is accurate and not an opinion which is not always true. Use these methods when looking to see if the source is reliable or not.

  1. Look to see if the website has been submitted for an ownership
  2. The information has the same information on other websites
  3. The created sources have been recently created
  4. Date of the page/ when it was published to see if it was changed or not
  5. The author of the information
  6. See if the info is something you learned before and see if it matches up
  7. Try to use your common sense when looking at the article.

Community Connection

Interviewee: Eric Cheung

Job: Animator

Company: Slap Happy

They make cartoon shows like Teen Titans, My little Pony, Transformers.

Questions:

1. Why are you passionate about your job?

He loves to draw and be creative. He enjoys making the cartoons for little kids like Teen Titans and My little Pony. Even though it’s hard work, he would never change his job unless he changes to a different company.

2. What obstacles have you faced to get where you are today?

You mostly have to hit the proper deadlines and you only get 2 weeks for 30 seconds of a show. So you need to be quick and know what you are doing in advance. Concentrate on what you are doing and don’t slack off otherwise you won’t get your work done on time. You might think that 2 weeks for 30 second might be a lot of time but it actually isn’t because it requires a lot of painstaking detail.

3. What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

You have to have basic drawing skills and enrol in an animation program in order to be an animator. Suggestions would be to study at Capilano college or Emily Carr.

4. Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

Yes,  you can reach him at this email, e.cheung@hotmail.com

5. How long have you did your job for?

13- 14 years all together but he has moved to different companies to contract for different shows will not likely just stay at Slap Happy going forward

6. Do you still need to spend time on learning and upgrading skills?

Yes, he often needs to watch tutorials for learning new software which tends to upgrade at least once a year and there is a 2 years program, you can take.

7. Why I chose him and what I learned about the interview

I chose Mr. Cheung because he is the dad of my sister’s friend and had heard he was involved in animation. He is part of a company that designs scenes for little kids/cartoon shows like Teen Titans, My little Pony and Transformers. His job is to draw the characters for the cartoons. When I grow up, I want to do something related because I love drawing overall.  It would also be nice to work in a team with others who are also just as passionate. I learned that you have to love what you are doing and don’t slack of because it can require a lot of overtime to meet deadlines.  Study really hard to get where you want to go and go to either Capilano college or Emily Carr for better learning. Hit the proper deadlines like in school and don’t hand in stuff late to develop good habits now because if I’m not able to finish the cartoon show on time they will get mad and will not have much success.
