HCE 9 – English Write

For the HCE assignment I chose the picture Birds on a Wire created by Banksy. The first time I looked at this picture I just saw a few birds sitting on a wire across from a smaller one. However, after a deeper insight into the picture I realized that the bird on the right who’s separated from the others represents racism. It shows how there’s division in the world still to this day and it shouldn’t matter what race/sex you are all people should be treated equally. You can even see the bird on the far right doesn’t even know why hes there he’s just there because other people are and its supposedly the normal thing to be racist because other people are. This also happens in real life. People are raised to believe some aren’t equal and they believe this because that’s how they were raised. At first, I believed this picture just represented racisms however, I now believe it just represents inequality in general and how some people are treated differently for something they can’t control. I think it’s disgusting how stuff like this actually happens in real life where people are discriminated against for things they can’t control. I believe the author is trying to say/show that everybody should be treated equally no matter their race sex or appearance. I also think the author is trying to show how words can hurt people and that people should make a bigger effort to stop racism.

The Veldt Podcast

In today’s episode of insight my co host Carrick and I discussed about The Veldt Written by Ray Bradbury. We explored two different themes of The Veldt and had a discussion on how they connect with real life.

Strontium

    1. the questions I researched into making my sway were questions like: Elemental information about Strontium, what is strontium? How was strontium discovered?
    2. The main tool I used for this project was google. I prefer to use google over other search engines because I’m familiar with it. For my images I mostly used creative commons then I also used some from pexels.
    3. The process I used to research my project was that I’d read 2 articles on the subject I was researching then if the information was similar I believed I could trust those sources so I’d use that information.
    4. I verified the information by reading multiple different articles than picking the ones that had the same information. I cited the information by including links to the websites I used.
    5. This process was fairly easy. Next time I would like to complete it sooner.

Community Connections

For my Community Connections project I chose to interview a former NFL athlete and one of my favorite current players fathers Terrence Metcalf. Terrence Metcalf is a former NFL guard for the Chicago bears, New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions.

I felt that Terrence Metcalf would be a good person to contact about my project for a few reasons. Firstly my interests in life are to do something with the NFL whether I’m a player a manager or even work in the sales department. Secondly Terrence Metcalf is one of my favorite players in NFL history since I believe that the being a part of the O-Line is the most underappreciated role in the entire NFL and I believe players like Terrence Metcalf go heavily underrated in NFL history.

While asking the questions to Terrence the biggest thing that stood out to me and I think I will take the most from is the fact that football wasn’t just a hobby to him it was a way to escape from the gang violence and crime around him, and if I want to become a professional athlete it has to be more than just a hobby to me.

The questions I asked Terrence Metcalf after asking if he’d be willing to answer a few questions are

Why are you passionate about playing football?

His answer was  “My passion for football came straight from my desires not to be a failure. Football for my was simply a way out of a small town that had taken so many lives around me. It’s seemed as if young guys was in a hurry to either get arrested or die.  I was a big, tall and fast kid that everybody loved to see do his thing.  That drove me to compete at a high level. Seventh grade was a struggle, but from eighth grade on God blessed me with success on the grind iron. I was a Parade All-American in high school, All-American in College, and a 3rd Round Pick to The Chicago Bears in 2002.”

What obstacles have you faced to get to where you are today?

“One of the greatest obstacles I had to face was overcoming my neighborhood woes. I totally refused to become a product of my environment. Growing up there was gangs, drugs, and friends dropping out of school. Doing wrong was simply the norm, so to not give into the foolishness was my number one goal in the 7th grade. I made my mind up and went to work, on and off the field.”

What advice would you give a kid if they’re interested in becoming an NFL athlete?

“For young players that’s looking to play Professional Football, I would say find your purpose early and never waiver from it.
Find your what, develop your why, and process your How? Never lose site in yourself.  The way you treat others, the process you go by working, and your relationship with God will lead and guide you down the right path.”
How have you had to overcome racial issues on your journey to becoming a professional athlete?
“Racial issues isn’t something I’ve had to deal with. Crazy people have said foolish things during games, but I would only deal with those individuals at that appointed time. There’s always politics in sports on every level, but it’s the individuals in those situations that has to find their proper process in difficult situations.”
I would like to say thank you to Terrence for taking the time out of his day to help me with this project, I learned a lot while doing this project and I hope that if I have another opportunity I can stay in contact with Terrence.
