Life of an Atom: Nitrogen
Hi, my name is Nite, (short for Nitrogen. Cool, right?) Right now I’m just floating out and about in the atmosphere, relaxing and cycling through the wind when out of no where my friends the bacteria pull me into the soil (Transformation #1: Atmosphere – organic soil.) They’re my good friends because they fixe me to be able to be useful to other resources that might need me. I stay there for a little while but then my soil is moved and used as fertilizer for a strawberry plant. I don’t like that, because excessive use of fertilizer wastes me, but at least I’m being used for something, right? When the strawberry plant starts to grow I am absorbed into it’s roots (Transformation #2: Organic soil – plant) I am now the strawberry plant. I stay in the strawberry plant for a few months until it is supposed to be harvest, but suddenly a sneaky deer comes by and eats me! Those poor farmers wont be happy about that (Transformation 3: Plant – Animal) I’m only hanging around with the deer until he digests all his food and out comes his feces! Delightful, right? So I’m just hangout out, chilling with feces, when my friends the decomposers come over and start to gobble me up. At least I’m leaving. (Transformation #4: Animal – feces) Time passes and while the weather changes I start to get washes away with the rain into the ocean. I become a sediment as I start to slowly sink to the bottom of the ocean. (Transformation #5: Feces – Sediment). It feels like I’m a sediment for years, just floating around, doing nothing, it would have been quite relaxing if it wasn’t for all the sea animals, I was terrified one was going to gobble be up and I’d have something to do again. Eventually myself and all the other sediments around me got bored and lonely, so we huddled up together and we all formed into something called sedimentary rock. (Transformation 6: Sediment – Sedimentary Rock)
Life of an Atom: Carbon
Hi, I’m Caleb the carbon atom. I just got into the body of this human when they suddenly decided to breath out and shoot me right back into the air! (Transformation #1: Human – Atmosphere) So, rejected and sad, I start floating around looking for some purpose in life, when I come across a tree that gladly takes me in. (Transformation #2: Atmosphere – Tree) I was there for a while and this tree and I were having a great time together when there was a forest fire which burned up my friend and passed me into the fumes of fire (Transformation #3: Tree – Gas) I went back to floating around looking for somewhere new to supply when I came across this volcano, it was massive, and really cool. Of course I jumped onto the opportunity, I mean come on. (Transformation #4: Gas – Volcano) I was there for years before that big guy exploded, and with good time because I was starting to get kind of antsy to get out of there. It was so hot I couldn’t stand the temperature, whew! Inside a piece magma, I landed in the ocean. Sinking to the bottom of the ocean, I thought, “Woah. This has been the most eventful thing to happen to me since entering a volcano” (Transformation #5: Volcano – Earth’s crust [AKA, Magma])
Life of an Atom: Phosphorous
Hey guys! My name’s Patricia the Phosphorous atom, and my story begins in the earth’s crust. I was there for what felt like a million years before anything interesting happened. Eventually, myself and the rest of the Phosphorous atoms around me started to mold together and create a phosphate rock (Transformation #1: Earth’s Crust – Phosphate Rock) a few more thousand years went by and eventually we made our way up to the top of the surface and broke apart in the soil (Transformation #2: Phosphate Rock – Soil) in that soil I was suddenly collected and dragged up by a blueberry plant, which made it pretty stronger, if I do say so myself. (Transformation #3: Soil – Plant) This plant and I were just become good friends when out of no where a bird came down and swooped in to take a big nasty bite out of my plant. I said good bye to the blue berry plant as I was carried off with the bird. (Transformation #4: Plant – Animal) The bird was flying high in the sky for a few hours when suddenly it was shot! Guess karma does exist after all. Serves you right for eating my plant. The bird fell into the ocean water, where it slowly starts to decompose and I float away, becoming ocean sediment once again. . . (Transformation #5: Animal – Sediment)
