The Apothecary – Maile Meloy

The Apothecary takes place in 1952 between World War 1 & 2 and is about a girl named Janie who moves from Los Angeles to London and meets a boy named Benjamin, who’s father, Mr Burrows, works as the local Apothecary down the street. After Benjamin’s father goes missing Benjamin and Janie work together to find out what happened to the Apothecary and through their journey find out that the Apothecary might have been more than what he seemed.

A friend forced me to read this book believing that I would love it and wouldn’t take no for an answer. When I first started the book I wasn’t so sure but as I read it I foudnthat I really enjoyed the storyline. It followed along with the idea of chemical magic, magic made with potions, mixes, and such. I really enjoy reading fiction books that take place during the Holocaust and books that have concepts that aren’t possible in real life and the fact that this book sort of had a mix of the two with a twist (that it took place before the Holocaust and used science to make magical things happen) made it stand out from the other books I have read.
