This painting that I did relates to the theme of people in the society of the novel, are being consumed in technology. I was inspired by the quote: “The electric thimble moved like a praying mantis on the pillow, touched by her hand. Now it was in her ear again, humming” (Page 45). I chose this quote because of the author, Ray Bradbury, who compared Mildred’s earphones to a praying mantis. Praying mantis is insects that paralyze their prey and suck their insides out, and this is what is happening to the people in the society of the novel, they are unaware of what is going on around them and are consumed in their technology. In this painting, I left Mildred’s face blank because I think it shows the disconnect between Mildred, and the main character, Montag, and how she has left nothing memorable behind that had an important effect on Montag.
