Week 5 – Precalc 11

This week in math we learned how to factor a trinomial. in the example below, I will walk you through the steps of factoring a trinomial

x^2-5x-14

the first step is to factor out the product which in this case was -14. The product is always the last number of a trinomial.

the product is -14

-14 is equal to 1 x -14 or 2 x -7

Then you look at the factors of the product and a pair of them have to add up to the sum. The sum is the middle number of the trinomial and in this case,  it is -5.

2-7=-5

the two numbers that add up to the sum are the numbers that have to be put into the final factored form.

(x+2)(x-7)
