1. What different conflicts has Canada been involved in during the 20th century?

World War 1 (1914-1918) –  32 countries involved in WW1 – Canada, USA, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Ottoman Empire, Kingdom of Bulgaria, Austria – Hungary, etc.

  • Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9, 1917 – April 12, 1917) – 10,602 casualties: 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded – It was an Entente victory, ending in a peaceful agreement between the. The Vimy victory shaped a Canadian way of making war. Other nations might celebrate flamboyant valour or dogged sacrifice; Canadians built on the conviction that only thorough preparation could spell success.
  • Battle of Passchendaele (Jul 31, 1917 – Nov 10, 1917) – More than 4,000 Canadians were killed and another 12,000 wounded – Victory by British and Canadian troops. The Battle of Passchendaele vicory of the British did come with a large loss of both British and Canadian troops leaving a less viable army composition.
  • Battle of Amiens (Aug 8, 1918 – Aug 11, 1918) – More than 19,000 Allied soldiers were killed or injured – Victory of Canadian and Allied troops. The Battle of Amiens was the start of the Hundred Days Offensive.
  • Battle of the Somme (Jul 1, 1916 – Nov 18, 1916) – Killed or wounded approximately 1.2 million men – British Commander in Chief Sir Douglas Haig called a halt to his army’s offensive near the Somme River in northwestern France, the Battle of Somme being inconclusive. The Battle of Somme had little to no help in the progression of Canada as mainly consisted of loosing men over the course of the battle, nothing but a tragic loss was made from the mess of it all for the opposing forces.
