Data Visualization

For my project of data visualization, I decided to make 2 different graphs to visualize my data on Pictochart, then I also made something out of RainbowLoom to help visualize my data.

The data I received was from the website statista.com and the data I found was data on the number of deaths from different kinds of cancer in Canada in 2019 alone. The data that I found on this website was already really easy to visualize in itself because it was organized by the different kinds of cancer in a bar graph so you could clearly see which cancers were killing people the most. What I did to help visualize this more was I inserted images of the part of the body cancer affects or just generally something linked to that kind of cancer because I found there were a lot of different kinds of cancers that I had no idea what they affected so it really helped me to have an image beside the graph showing where cancer affects the body.

Then because I didn’t want to just use this data because it didn’t show the people who got cancer but defeated it, I made another graph using the information from www.cancer.ca to find the number of males and females in 2019 that received cancer and also the males and females who passed away from cancer. I found a really good way to represent this data was by using a stacked Venn Diagram because it shows the group of the number of people that received cancer and then out of that group, the ones that unfortunately passed away.

Here is the diagram that I made:

After I made this Pictochart, I decided I wanted to represent this data in a physical way. So, I was at my house and found my old RainbowLoom and decided it was a good idea to make something out of this.

The following image is my end product:

As you can see from this picture, I had each band on the bracelet represent 100 people that unfortunately lost battles to cancer. Something to note on this representation is that whatever the number of people was, I would always round up to the nearest thousand and never round down. I felt like this was the right thing to do because this is representing people’s lives and I didn’t want anyone to be forgotten.

While doing this project, something that really surprised me was there weren’t as many people who passed away from breast cancer then I thought. I thought it would be the most popular type of cancer and it would be a much higher number then it is. The lung and bronchus cancer did surprise mt thought with the super high number and I did not know that many people suffered from it. My thinking for this is because in this day and age, there is a lot of people smoking cigarettes and vaping and those things have a huge impact on your lungs and it can cause lung and bronchus cancer. Also, when I did the stacked Venn diagram, I was extremely shocked at the survival rate of men and women with cancer. This is because the percentage of people who pass away is approximately 37% and so that means the survival rate is only 63% and I thought the survival rate was much higher than that. I know many people who have been affected by cancer including one of my friends at Riverside and I only know 1 person that passed away from Cancer and approximately 5 people that survived and so I was shocked at how lucky all the survivors are because only a 63% chance of living is not that high.

Overall I feel very happy with this project and feel like I did a good job because I created 3 different ways to represent the data I received. This project also opened my eyes to the different kinds of cancer and how they can affect people

The file below is the raw data I received from statista.com:

Hubbard2019DataAnalysisThoughts

Before reading the article:

Statistics are a big part of our society today. They are often used to trick or manipulate the audience into thinking that something is true by just agreeing with them without having the necessary information to fully understand a scenario. Statistics are something that everyone believes because they think that they are factual but in reality, the statistics can be manipulated however someone wants them to be.

After reading the article:

I felt like I learned a lot after reading this article about statistics. Although statistics are something that we use a lot of in our lives to make educated decisions. They are not always accurate. Basically,  you can never trust exactly what statistics are telling you because they can be made to sound exactly how you want them to sound. There is a lot of different ways that they can still be accurate but very deceiving. For example, if you asked 4 people if they like pizza and 3 people say no, then you have a statistic that only 25% of people like pizza. But in reality, if you ask 100 people if they like pizza, you are most likely going to get 80% of people who like pizza. This is because the less amount of people are in your survey, the less accurate it will be. Then people can also use this in a bad way, an example would be “only 25% of people like Joe’s pizza” because that is technically what they found if they only asked 4 people, but it is really deceiving and the statistic used for a bad purpose. Another way that statistics can be rigged is if the question is biased in one way towards an idea instead of being neutral, an example of this is “Do you like how Joe’s makes its pizza with frozen premade pizza crust?” almost everyone will yes that they don’t like it because of the way that the  question is worded. There is no way that we can trust all statistics, so basically, we just need to make our own interpretations if the statistic is correct by looking if it was a fair question and seeing if the results could have been modified in a specific way. We need to use our common sense even if it is really hard.

Core Competent Canadians

Question 1: What did you know about the Core Competencies before this activity? What did you learn?

I knew that the core competencies are essential to us in the future and they are qualities that we are going to need for pretty much everything that we are going to need to do. Today I learned that there are going to be different job opportunities in the future that don’t even currently exist. I also learned that there are Canadians that have mastered some of the core competencies and it had taken them very far in their life.

Question 2: How can your knowledge of the Core Competencies help you in your school life? Personal life?

Knowing the Core Competencies can give me a really big advantage to help me in my school and personal life. When we are going to graduate, there are going to be many different job opportunities that aren’t available now. If we are very familiar with these 6 core competencies, they will make even more opportunities available to us then just academics alone. For example, when we graduate, there might be an opportunity that needs someone to be really strong in the communication competency. By practicing this skill in school, I am going to be one of these people skilled in this competency. This can also help me while I am at school by helping me with assignments. If I am doing a research project, I am going to need to be strong with the critical thinking competency and analyze the information correctly. Knowing the competencies will also help me while analyzing other people because I will be able to recognize people who are strong in other competencies and do a project about them.

Additional Comments:

I feel like this activity has really improved my knowledge about the core competencies and I now have a better understanding of how these can and will help us in the future. I feel like now I have an advantage over students from other schools because I am aware of these core competencies and can start to master them now.

Substance Abuse Role play

Here is the video of the skit that me, Stefan and Cleon did for our substance abuse role play:

Questions:

  • What are the influences involved in your role play?

The pressures in our role play were me and Stefan that tried to pressure Cleon into making a decision really quickly. It is best if you can act fast because if you are hesitant it will just become harder to get out of a scenario like this.

  • Write a script for your role play:

  • Explain how your conflict/issue was resolved. What skills were used to resolve this conflict?

There are three ways that we learned on how to get out of this conflict. They are negotiation, delay and refusal. My favorite one would be the negotiation because you are standing up for yourself and are not being rude to the other person. Although, all of them work and if someone is offering you cigarettes like me and Stefan were to Cleon, the best approach would be refusal because then your friends know not to offer you the same thing again.

  • How would using these skills make the person in the role play more resilient?

It would make them more resilient because it would make the person a lot harder to influence to bad stuff if they know how to talk their way out of it. For example, if someone is pressured to take drugs, they can use their communication skills to get out of the scenario because they know how to properly use the delay, refusal and negotiation tactics.
