Taming of the Shrew – Stop Motion // Sophie and Morgan

Taming of the Shrew- Stop Motion Video

Our presentation of the induction scene in Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare was filmed in the form of stop motion on an app called Stop-Motion video which you can get off the App store. During the process of this film the people working on this project were Morgan Yard and Sophie Irvine, Morgan did most of the filming and some editing and Sophie did the majority of character moving/adjusting and editing. The bulk of the presentation was the induction scene which took over most of the movie and there was only about 10 seconds of the inset in the end. The main the thing we we were focusing in while doing this project was induction and inset scenes Induction is the play within a play like an introduction to the main performance. Inset is the main play that the characters from the induction “watch”. During the filming process we had some difficulty with making the “slides” flow but the overall project we would say was fun and interesting. We learned while filming this project that there are many different and unique ways to film a presentation in video form like this one.

Animal Farm Propaganda Poster

Animal Farm

Propaganda Poster

In the book “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, there are animals that live on a farm owned by Mr. Jones. The animals decide that they want to rebel against their owner due to the awful treatment and horrendous labour put upon the animals. Once the animals rule the farm there proves to be a bit of a power struggle.

The propaganda poster represents the harsh reality of the animals not only in the book but in real life. “We are one, so we should act like one” is the quote used in the poster; this tries to convince the animals that they are all suffering from the same situation using the technique glittering generalities. This is because the quote is a slogan and if it is inspirational enough to the animals; they would repeat and speak of it a lot like repetition. It makes the animals look a lot better than the humans. Using card stacking, the poster makes others feel bad for the animals. Hopefully that would mean that other animals would bandwagon and choose to join the side that all the other animals chose to join. It would be the best thing for the animals pick being treated equally instead of being treated like labour workers, which is the goal of the propaganda poster.

Electricity Generation & Transmission

Electricity Generation

Hydroelectric Generation:

Hydroelectric power is electricity generated by the force of water. It is a very reliable and well used source of power as it produces 95% of British Columbia’s electricity. The way it works is the water that is trapped behind the dam is forced down into a penstock. The water then creates enough force to spin the turbines which creates the electricity. The electricity is then sent up to the generating station and is distributed where it is needed. The water used in this process is sent back to a river or lake. This way of creating energy is very good because it has no pollution (eco friendly), it is renewable as it reuses the water and it produces a lot of power. Although it may seem like a flawless way of producing electricity; it still has some disadvantages. A hydroelectric dam is very expensive to build and maintain, it requires a lot of construction and also takes up a lot of space. You also must flood the area behind the dam in order to create the right force which takes a effect on the ecosystem. Hydroelectric power is still a very good way of making energy.

Thermal Generation:

Thermal generation power involves the heating of gases or water. This form of energy creating is not used as much. It is used under 5% of the time in British Columbia. The power is created by heating gases or water creating a steam. The steam then comes up and causes the turbines to spin which creates the power. Thermal generation is good because the fuels used to create the electricity are common and simple to get, it is also is cheaper the hydroelectric dams and takes up less space then them too. This form of energy isn’t always good because you cannot renew the fuel and the fuel can create pollution. It is also quite dangerous because the fuel can be explosive.

Electricity Transmission

The transporting of electricity can be pretty dangerous due to it’s extreme amount of power that it is transmitting, but it is relatively easy to transport. The electricity starts starts at the generating station (hydro dam or thermal plant). It is then sent to a step up transformer that increases the voltage in the electricity produced. The power is sent across huge towers that take the power to a step down sub-station transformer which reduces the voltage to a safe amount that can pass through a city. The electricity again travels to  another step down transformer called a distribution station which again lowers the voltage that is a safe to be distributed to our homes.

Science App Review

Science app

App Review:

The app Chemisrty True or False is a great app that you can use to for memorizing the elements on the the periodic table. Basically you have a screen with the name of an element and the symbol and you have to determine if the symbol matchs the element by answering with true or false. The app works pretty well it only crashed once but other then that I give the app an 8/10.

Questions:

1) Is the app easy to use?
Yes, you basically just press play and start. It is very easy to use.

2) Is it related to what you are learning?
We were learning about chemistry so technically yes.

3) Does it teach you anything?
It helps you memorize the elements and its symbols.

4) Does it have lots of ads that disturb your use of the app?
No not really just after you finish playing the game. You can get an ad free version but it’s not worth it because you have to pay $1.19

5) Do you need wifi or anything to acess this app?

No you don’t so you can just use it anywhere you want which is convenient if you are out and need to study for a test etc.

6) Is it easy to understand?
Yes it is simple to use and you learn a lot from it.

Thank you
