This picture shows a few different types of executions.
Capital punishment or otherwise known as the death penalty is the act of executing someone after a legal trial. While Canada once supported capital punishment, they have abolished it in the 1960’s.(talk more about history in topic sentence) In Canada, they restrict people to do Capital Punishment unless it is proceeded by the military. Capital punishment in Canada was approved in 1865 and since then, many things have changed. Capital punishment was known as the death penalty until 1961 when it was changed into the capital punishment we all know to this day. (this sentence is a bit awkward). The changed made it so that only the criminals who have done or committed capital offences are sentenced to be iced. Canada has abolished capital punishment in 1988 after the hanging of Ronald Turpin. Capital punishment is a controversial topic and people can choose a side depending on what they think is right.
When you look inside the short story, “Two Fishermen”, Delaney is convicted of killing Matthew Rhinehart as he catches the man molesting his wife and is sentenced to be hung. Nothing would have changed, even though the story takes place in the U.S if it took place in Canada nothing would have changed all because of the time period. As stated before, before 1962 all crimes received a death penalty and there are clues around the story which makes up believe that this takes place in the 1920’s or 1930’s. A main clue is the lack of technology use or even mention in the story. So in short, nothing different would have happened in the story if it took place in Canada except maybe there are moose.
In my opinion, Thomas Delaney should not have been executed for killing Matthew Rhinehart. First of all, you have to know that he protected his wife from Rhinehart who was in the process of molesting her. Thomas also took quite a beating from Rhinehart so in technicality he was defending himself. If Thomas didn’t kill him, he would have still faced charges for molestation. If they both survived would they both have been executed? They should have taken all things to account on what happened that day before deciding his execution.
