Math Week 9

Greatest Common Factor in polynomials

If the expression has numbers that have common factors you can pull them out.

4x – 8 + 6

The greatest common factor here would be 2 which means the polynomial would become:

2(2x – 4 + 3)

Math Week 7

Using SOH CAH TOA to find the side of a right angle triangle

Say you have a triangle where you know an acute angle and the hypotenuse and you’re trying to find the opposite side. You would use Sin. (SOH Sin Opposite Hypotenuse)

Ex. Sin 39 = x/9

(9)Sin39 = x/9(9)

x = 5.7

(39 = angle, x = opposite side, 9 Hypotenuse)

Math Week 3/4

This week we learned about Exponent Laws.

When you’re multiplying two numbers with exponents, you add the exponents together. When you’re dividing two numbers with exponents, you subtract the exponents. If there is two exponents to one number {ex. (3^2)^4 } you multiply the exponents together.

Math Week 6

The formula for surface area of a cone is (Pi)(radius^2) + (Pi)(Radius)(Slant)

To find the slant height you can use the radius, height and unknown slant height to make a right triangle. Then use the Pythagorean theorem to find the missing side.

Math Week 8

This week we learned to use FOIL when mulitplying two binomials.

F- First numbers in each bracket

O- Outside numbers in each bracket

I- Inside numbers in each bracket

L- Last numbers in each bracket

(a+b)(c+d)

F – ac

O- ad

I- bc

L- bd

Math Week 13

This week in math we worked on Relations and Functions. A function is where each input value only relates to one output value.

To find out whether or not something is a function, in ordered pairs you look to see if a domain number is repeated. If its repeated, then it’s not a function. In a graph you can use the vertical line test, if a vertical line in drawn on a graph and it hits more than one point then it’s not a function.

(2,3) (4,5) (7,4) (8,4) is a function

(2,3) (4,5) (2,4) (8,7) is not a function

Math Week 10

Difference of Squares

(a-b)(a+b) = a^2 + ab – ba – b^2

The two middle terms cancel each other out and leaves (a^2 – b^2)

Difference in this context means that you’re subtracting the two squares

Math Week 2

This week we learned that any number to the power of 1/2 is the same as the square root of that number.

X^1/2 = The square root of X

If it is to the power of 1/3 it would then be the cube root of X
