For my community connection assignment, I interviewed Ms. Yorke, a science teacher at Riverside Secondary. I chose to interview Ms. Yorke for this assignment because I have always loved science, more specifically biology and psychology. I was very happy to find out that I might be able to take biology 12 and psychology 12 with Ms. Yorke in the future after she mentioned she teaches those courses as well.
During the first semester, Ms. Yorke was my science teacher. I enjoyed being in her class very much and felt I had learned many new and interesting things from her classes. Many of the labs and projects we did were fun and engaging and helped me better understand the subjects. While having Ms. Yorke as my science teacher for the first semester, I appreciated all the time and effort she put into being a great teacher for the class. I felt like Ms. Yorke had always wanted to make lessons and information easy to understand and access throughout the whole semester. She always answered our questions and linked all the information and resources we needed online which was very helpful.
Here are some pictures of past projects and activities from my science class with Ms. Yorke:
This was during our Earth science unit, where we did field studies at Oxbow Pond and Coquitlam River. We compared water quality and invertebrate life between the two bodies of water.
This was during our electricity unit, where we had to create a solution to a problem using our knowledge on electrical circuits and microbits. Our invention was a thermometer which is connected to entrances of public spaces to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
After having interviewed Ms. Yorke, her responses were very informative about her role as a science teacher and had helped me further understand what it’s like being a teacher at Riverside. Ms. Yorke’s responses have also been a great reminder on how much effort it takes to be a good teacher and how important it is to be organized and understanding to be a teacher. I hope to one day also be as good of a science teacher as Ms. Yorke is for kids in the future.
I contacted Ms. Yorke via email.
