This poems deep meaning is about how people were doing the tasks and accepting the fact that they had to do things that they didn’t wanted to do but also clinging onto the hope of change coming in the future. The hope that Obama will help build that bridge to a better future. “Praise song for struggle, praise song for the day. Praise song for every hand-lettered sign, the figuring-it out at kitchen tables.”(Line 31-33). I use this quote from the poem because it shows how women were treated unfairly and how they had to work their way up to how men were treated and for equality, the fight for equality because they had hope that change was going to come. Say it plain: that many have died for this day. Sing the names of the dead who brought us here, who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges” (Line 25-27). These three line show how the Chinese were treated unfairly but they knew that they had to do the work they were given. “Picked the cotton and the lettuce, built brick by brick the glittering edifices they would then keep clean and work inside of.” (Line 28-30). This shows how African Americans were treated unfairly and not as humans. The last line of the poem “Praise song for walking forward in that light.”(Line 43) Is an example how they always looked for the light at the need of the tunnel and how they had hope that, that light would come.
