Lit Circle Final Project- Little Brother

“Little Brother” by Cory Doctorow tells the story of what it means to have your right to freedom and privacy violated by the government. Primarily, the story follows Marcus Yallow, a San Francisco teenager who plans to take down the Department of Homeland Security. Shortly after a terrorist attack on San Francisco, Marcus and his friends are taken into custody by the DHS. Then, they are brought to a prison where Marcus is ruthlessly interrogated and received various threats. For instance, he is told, “But from now on, you belong to us. We will be watching you.” (Doctorow, pg. 25). Nevertheless, Marcus is released and returns home to find that the police treat every citizen in his city as a potential terrorist. Notably, police start tracking bus passes and people’s locations throughout the city during the day. Therefore, Marcus decides to create the Xnet, an “Anonymous web, email and IM” site devoted to fighting the DHS (Doctorow, pg. 33). Essentially, Marcus uses the Xnet to expose the DHS by posting various stories from people that opened up about their experience in the same prison. Most importantly, he had a video of the president’s chief saying that “The only reason the country cares what they think in San Francisco is that they had the good fortune to have been blown to hell by some Islamic terrorists.”(Doctorow, pg. 101). Ultimately, Marcus reveals that the elected government failed to protect their citizens while disregarding their right to freedom and privacy.
