Community Connections

I interviewed Sherri Robinson. She is a lawyer at CentraLaywers law firm, and her practice focuses on Wills and Estates. When choosing someone to interview I didn’t have a certain individual in mind, however, I knew I wanted to interview a lawyer because I am curious about Law and I am interested in it as a career. I learned that when choosing a field of law to pursue you should be passionate about it and enjoy the work you are doing. As well I learned that there will always be obstacles in your way but if you work hard you can overcome them and achieve your goal. This connects to my interests in law, science and other areas because it gives me the motivation to work hard and always do my best. Overall, I learned a lot from this interview about the occupation I am interested in and got great advice for my future. Furthermore, I learned how I can make more connections in my community.

Interview Questions:

Why are you passionate about your job? I really enjoy working with people and coming up with creative solutions that will help people move through what can sometimes be a very difficult time in their lives (IE. Death of a loved one). I focus my practice on wills and estates and there are always interesting issues that come up.

What obstacles have you faced?  I was raised by a single mom and worked 2 jobs while going through school. There were obstacles with finding the right fit, both in the area of law and firm. I now have my own firm with my 4 other partners but it took many years to get here.

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?   I would definitely say that the law opens all sorts of doors, whether it’s working in government or private practice or the business sector. I always give mew law students the advice that it is important to find passion and enjoy what you do and that they should follow the area of law that most interests them vs. just doing the work that is put in front of you.

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you? Yes, email is usually best. (srobinson@centralawyers.ca)

Is this what you envisioned yourself doing when you were younger?  Yes, I decided when I was 8 that I wanted to be a lawyer after watching numerous episodes of Judge and Divorce Court!

How did you choose the field of law you wanted to pursue?  I enjoyed the wills and trusts class at law school but I always thought I was going to be a criminal prosecutor until I graduated and started working in private practice. This was the one area of law that I was passionate about so I had to make a few movies in order to specialize in this area.
