Week 4 – Math 11

This week in math 11 we learned about how to multiply radicals. Multiplying radicals sounds a lot harder than it it because everything we need to know we have already learned. One of the key word to remember is Expand, this word means to distribute. Distributing means to multiply a number on the outside of the brackets by the numbers on the inside. (ex. 4(2x+5) ) you would distribute the 4 to the inside numbers. Once you have distributed you will then have a new set of numbers (ex. 8x+20) for this type of distributing this would be your answer.

The other form of distributing would be FOIL. Foil stands for First, Outside, Inside, Last. When using foil you will have 2 sets of brackets or one bracket to the power of 2 (ex. (x+5)^2 or (2x+3)(x+4) ) When a set of brackets has a power the easiest thing is to re write the bracket depending on the power, so in this case 2. You would then multiply the first numbers in the brackets, outside numbers, inside number and last numbers to then have your new set of numbers. After that you will then simplify by collecting like terms. Once the like terms are collected you will then find your answer. (work shown below) Its important to remember positive and negative signs and always make sure you have simplified your radials before distributing.
