WEX 12 – Businesses in a Pandemic

Whitecaps FC

Whitecaps FC is Vancouver’s professional soccer organization. They rely on ticket sales and donations to help them donate money to charities and soccer matches to build their fanbase. With the season being stopped a few matches in, there is not very much money flowing through the Whitecaps to charities and no matches no entertain viewers, so the Whitecaps have adapted to the situation at hand to try and solve these problems. Some of the things they have been doing are as follows:

  • Sell face masks with Whitecaps and VanAquarium designs on them to save the Aquarium
    • They have sold over 100,000 masks
    • All net sales benefits go towards the aquarium
    • 10 max. per order
  • Reruns of past soccer games
  • Putting on at-home skills clinics on Wednesdays as well
  • as stay home challenges
  • Whitecaps players have been training from home and have recently began non-contact training on the field in small groups
  • Feature frontline heroes on their social media
  • They have introduced a children’s program called ‘Caps Clubhouse
    • Includes a book reading session with Spike, a player or club ambassador, and a sign-language interpreter, an energizing mid-episode stretch, at home activity (sing-a-long, arts and crafts, etc.), and every Friday episode features a dance tutorial with the BCAA mascot Blue
  • Sell limited edition print by local artist Carson Ting to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (see picture above)
    • All proceeds benefit the GVFB
    • 4 max. per order
    • Available in colour and in Blue
    • Features frontline workers, Seth Rogan, Bonnie Henry, and more.

In the past, Whitecaps have done auctions of Whitecaps Swag including signed jerseys, soccer, balls, hats, etc. I think that I would hold an online auction with items like these to raise money for a charity. I think I would choose BCCH as to donate at least some of the money to as they use their 50/50 ticket sales during home matches to raise money for BCCH and they cannot do those at the moment because of the pandemic.

Another thing that I think that I might do during these times would be to offer “chalk talks” by coaches in the club to explain different positions and systems to the public and maybe even Whitecaps players to continue player development and game understanding.

Diffusion in Agar Cubes

  1. In terms of maximizing diffusion, what was the most effective size cube that you tested?
The most effect cube was the smallest one (1x1x1cm). It had a percent of diffusion of 100%.
  2. Why was that size most effective at maximizing diffusion? what are the important factors that affect how materials diffuse into cells of tissues?
There was less surface area for the 1x1x1cm cube, so it needed less time to diffuse as the others. This cube also had the best surface volume to volume ratio (6:1), while the others had a ratio of 1:3 and 2:1 (as seen on the data sheet). Important factors include surface area to volume ratio, concentration, temperature, and pressure.
  3. If a large surface are is helpful to cells, why do cells not grow to be very large?
Surface area is important, but so is the volume of the cell. If a cell grows, the volume and surface area will also grow and make it a longer and harder process to diffuse.
  4. You have three cubes, A, B, and C. They have surfaces to volume ratios 3:1. 5:2. and 4:1 respectively. Which of these cubes is going to be the most effective at maximizing diffusion, how do you know this?
Cube C would be the most effective cell to maximize diffusion as it has the highest surface area to volume ratio.
  5. How does your body adapt surface area-to-volume ratios to help exchange gases?
The body adapts surface area-to-volume ratios by increasing this ratio to increase the exchange rate of gases. Having a low surface area to volume ratio, the gas exchange rate will drop.
  6. Why can’t certain cells, like bacteria, get to be the size of a small fish?
Bacteria need to diffuse effectively to survive. Being unicellular means that bacteria needs to have a high surface area to volume ratio, which is hard to have when it is the size of a fish.
  7. What are the advantages of large organisms being multicellular?
Being a multicellular organism is an advantage as it means that it can diffuse effectively by having many small cells diffusing at once and doing so quickly as opposed to one giant cell having to fully diffuse and taking a long time to do so.

Pre Calc 12 – Transformations Reflection

How has this unit impacted your creative and critical thinking and communication skills?

In this unit, we developed our communication skills by talking to our peers to figure out certain problems or questions. This helped me develop my communication skills by forcing me to take what I am thinking and turn it into words to explain to others. This also helped my critical thinking because we had to come up with solutions to problems and questions that I didn’t have a lot of practice with. Doing this also helped with creative thinking because we had to think about the question and try to develop a solution. Also, my creative thinking was developed by learning to think outside of the box and try things before coming up with a solution, like with the “teenager effect” with (x-2) moving right instead of left. I believe that talking with our peers helps us develop these skills and helps us better understand the concepts by trying to develop our own solutions to problems and it helps us remember the solutions because we are forced to think of it and analyse the problem.
