With “The Crucible” I have been able to see different people’s opinions depending on their social standings. “The Crucible” shows that what someone may think is right, another person may find it extremely unacceptable. What people define themselves can be greatly changed by other’s opinions and expectations of the said person. With identity, people want to be able to fit in and to be accepted into society. They want to be able to be “well known” and have a “good reputation” among other people. There are people throughout the world who still live in their own little bubble and don’t accept other people of other faith and culture. People then who are part of these communities and want to express themselves in different ways feel oppressed to do so and are forced to follow the status-quo or to put on a mask to hide their true selves. In the end, I think that “The Crucible” shows that the world needs to learn how to broadens it’s views on society as a whole and teach people that there isn’t always one way. People should be more open minded about other people’s beliefs and lifestyles and realize that there isn’t “right” way to live and people shouldn’t be judged without real proof.
For “The Crucible” showed the mindset that people used to have in the past. We can compare it to today and we can see that people have or have not changed to this mindset. Today there are still many people who won’t accept other points of view or think that they’re the one who’s right and everyone else’s opinion is wrong. I think that “The Crucible” shows the extreme side of the negative affects of someone who has more power and word over others. Since everyone would trust the girls’ word without hesitating, there were many people who had their lives lost. This is a key example of people being lead blindly. I also think that personally, “The Crucible” displays the lack in personal self confidence. People would easily buy into each other’s pressure and submit to them. An example is Abigail’s control over Mary and how she almost immediately got Mary back on her side again. With this, it shows the lack of self independence and the fear of other’s. The last thing is that it also shows that people are unable to really learn the consequences of something unless they really experience it. At first, the accusations were to just get rid of people that they didn’t like, but then it slowly turned into them accusing more people to save themselves from death. In general, I think that “The Crucible” outlines the need for learning lessons and weighing out your morals and values for which is more important.
There once was a pup
Whose name was Pip
Their favourite thing to do was skip
He wanted to be a support puppy
To help the blind as a buddy
Pip went to test their worth,
Wanting to join the club
For the best puppies on earth
He jumped all around
Prancing, and dancing like a cub
The door, he finally found
They tested his height
To see if he could pass
To be the perfect guide puppy
Hopefully not the last
Reluctantly she let him in,
As his ears just barely reached
Nodding towards the door
Pip nearly preached
As skipped across floor
He wanted to be the very best
Just like the LEGEND Ace
But Pip wasn’t like all the rest
It was something he would have to face
He was a small little pup,
But he knew he had the stuff
To make it to the top
Without any bluffs
Yet all those around
Doubted little Pip,
They sneered and jeered
As if he were a clown
Sending his confidence into the ground
Then, it finally came
This time, it wouldn’t be a game
It was the day of the test
He couldn’t risk getting into a mess
Pip wanted to be the very best
Just like the LEGEND Ace
But Pip wasn’t like all the rest
It was something he would have to face
He knew he had the skills
Because he worked hard
Just hope he wouldn’t get the chills
And run into a bar
But as he admired her
He stumbled and tripped
Crashing down
The evaluator nearly flipped
Kicked him out
And left to pout
He frowned as he looked
Towards the Legend Ace
And overlooked
The others with glee on their face
As they were given their medal
And praised by the others
As their skills were next level
They had a bond like brothers
But outside Pip saw
A lady, lost
Behind her a claw
Filled with dirt and ready to toss
He bolted towards her
Under the gates
His fur blurred
As the others raced
To see what had occurred
Taking her purse,
He lead her away
Towards safety
And to another day
Across on the sidewalk
The others had seen
Pip, and his bravery
They were quite keen
With smiles about
They praised with shouts
Pip was given the cape
Of the Legend Ace
For Pip wanted to be the very best
Just like the Legend Ace
But Pip wasn’t like the rest
He has passed the test
The ballad, “The Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot expresses the themes of loss and environment. The poem is about a freighter boat that sinks during it’s journey across Lake Superior. The cause of the boat’s sinking is from the from the early storms on the lake: ” The good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed / When the gales of November came early” (Lightfoot, 7-8). It shows how the death of twenty-nine people could affect so many more. There were many people who went to go pray for the sailors in the maritime sailors’ cathedral. Even though there are some people that may not have any connection to the sailors, people would still care about the lives that have been lost: “The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times / for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald” (Lightfoot, 51-52). They would respect the lives of the people who were lost and help the families and others who were affected. The power of the church bell shows the importance of the event and how everyone is paying their respects towards the families.
The environment is a key factor in the poem because it caused the boat to sink. The environment demonstrates the consequences of people who aren’t ready for what is to come to them. As the sailors were unaware of the storm that would be coming early, they didn’t prepare for it: “And a wave broke over the railing / And every man knew, as the captain did too, / T’was the witch of November come stealin'” (Lightfoot, 18-20). The message being conveyed is that one should prepare well for long trips, as they won’t know what would be coming for them. Next time, you should be prepared for anything that might happen, and, try to foresee what will come so you’ll have a better plan.
It was Christmas Eve and the cold winds banged against the window,
Delicately wrapping the shining platinum chain in a box, she heard the bustling of the last-minute shoppers below,
She pondered and thought
What the new year would bring.
Would she be able to carry out to the spring?
She glanced at all the soft knitted mittens and gloves,
The ones that she spent days filling with love.
If the day would come where she could have her own child,
Oh, would that make her husband smile.
She looked at the box that sat in the corner,
The one that was filled with funds for a son or daughter,
Was sealed away for the day come,
But otherwise they were almost short in funds.
Soon Jim came up the stairs with a pitter patter,
He smiled at Della taking off his hat that was tattered.
Then gave her hug wishing her Merry Christmas,
And pulled out a small box with a small little red bow.
When she opened it up, oh how her face glowed.
Within the box were the combs she had admired,
Of pure tortoise shell embedded with jewels
She then brought out her own gift for Jim,
The beautiful yet simple chain for his watch,
With a click he attached it on and checked the time,
“Why Dell dear, what shall we do? Should there be others that we could give a gift too?”
Della thought for a moment,
“Shall we see if there is a child in the orphanage?”
They pulled on their coats, their gloves and their toques
Then skipped down the stairs to see if it would do.
Shuffling down the streets they went
To the orphanage to see their luck,
To give the child a much warm home.
Jim opened the door with Della behind
They heard the ring of a bell
The children started to get into line.
Their eyes darted and some even whispered,
“Could it be a miracle to get a family this winter?”
There was an old lady who came to the pair,
“You’re here to adopt a child I’m aware?”
Della nodded and said to the children “Hi”
As she was looking there was one who caught her eye.
A small little girl, around two or three,
Was standing right next to the little Christmas tree.
Her eyes were full of wonder,
Not knowing anything about the world around her.
Della smiled and walked up the girl,
“What may be your name dear?”
“Ruth,” she said with a small little voice,
Della glanced back at Jim know she was her choice.
Jim went to the lady and signed some forms,
Confirming that they were able to support,
A new child that would be in their lives.
Ruth still confused didn’t know what was happening,
But felt the emotion as she started crying.
Della then scooped her up in her arms
Where Ruth would hold on knowing that she was to protect her from harm.
Jim with a small bag of her belongings,
Together they walked home knowing,
That Christmas is more than just giving.
As the Magi had given the gifts to Jesus,
Why they had given the gift of a family.
Why the gifts of Christmas just keep on giving,
As the Magi had done for the baby Jesus,
So will many more to come.
As they are the Magi.
Sentence fragments are when sentences are not complete. To have a full sentence, you need to have a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. Basically, by taking one of those three things away, your sentence becomes a fragment. Some statements that people commonly say to othere, are often sentence fragments.
An example would be: “Then, volunteered to be a tutor for a local elementary school.”
In the sentence, there’s a verb and a complete thought, but there is no subject. Even though, it may look like a full sentence, it’s still considered a fragment. With the sentence alone, the reader does not know who is volunteering. Therefore making it a fragment because it cannot be understood by itself.
On the other hand, the sentence “I ran.” would not be a sentence fragment. It contains a subject and a verb, and can be fully understood by itself. So, even though it may be very short, the sentence would not be considered a fragment.
As a third example, we’ll use the following sentence: “Mangoes, the best fruit in the world.”
In this sentence, it’s missing a verb. The statement is a complete thought with a subject, but there is no verb that brings them together. Again, making it a sentence fragment.
In the end, sentence fragments are very common in day to day language. We usually use them when talking to one another in person or while texting. But, it’s good to keep in mind that while writing to complete your sentences. Just make sure it contains a subject, a verb and is a complete thought!
Technology has always had a large impact in our society, and it has changed many different dependencies that people have. There are many technologies that people depend on from a day to day basis; whether it be an alarm to wake you up in the morning or life support keeping you alive. People as a society have always been dependent on technology, but we don’t think that we’re too dependent. Even today, there are many people who prefer to not rely on modern technology. Some people prefer to send physical mail to one another. “Technology is not the problem, it’s the way we use it”(link). People are are always able to adapt to a situation, and as a society, we’ve learn to adapt to it. “Just because we might rely on something, doesn’t mean we can’t live without it” (link). In conclusion, we’re still able to strive and use technology to our advantage to make our lives safer, healthier and more efficient. We’re not over dependent, we’re just taking advantage of what we have.
