HCE 9 – English Assignment

“Assimilation vs. Inclusivity”

This image represents indigenous children being taken to residential schools and losing their culture, identity, and pride. This image shows how they lost their culture by demonstrating the bright colours that start from the right side of the children and then as it goes down, the colours get sadder and depressing and their facial expressions change. The children on the right side are smiling and the children on the left have somber expressions. Some children on the right look over to the other children as if they notice that they are gone or maybe wondering why they look so different now. Some of the children also have their headpieces, braids and they wear colourful clothes which all represent their culture. The other children, however, have their braids cut, wearing plain grey clothes and their skin colour is gone. This represents them being forced out of their culture and them being whitewashed by the residential schools. The residential schools also did cut their hair and put them in uniforms that resemble the clothes they are wearing in the image. Some of the children on the left are sadly looking down. This could mean that they are too frightened to do anything about what the schools are doing to them. The other children are holding their heads up confidently without fear. This demonstrates that they were much happier and free of fear before they were forced to go to residential schools.

English Honours 9 – Bento Box

This is a project I did using genial.ly to create a Bento Box of symbolic objects, which are interactive with my written content for The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline.

Reflection:

For this project, I demonstrated Critical Thinking by thinking of some objects that have a symbolic connection to the story and to the sections. I chose my inquiry question very carefully so that it can link very strongly to the story. I also read through the story again to find quotes that can relate to each section I did.

The Veldt by Ray Bradbury – Blackout Poem

Here is my blackout poem which is based on “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury. I chose a page from “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins.

Reflection:

For this poem, I chose the theme of abandonment, parents leaving technology to raise their children. Words in my poem like “who was there” and “who steadied me” shows that the parents, who are supposed to take care of their kids and set a good example for them, were never there for them. Another phrase in my poem “the thin connection has been severed¨ means that the already bad relationship between the parents and their child has led to there being no relationship at all. I drew a kid on his phone surrounded by a lot of other technology because it shows that the parents gave him stuff they thought would make him happy and occupied. The technology is in his life way more than his parents are. He also has a faint smile because that is what he thinks he is supposed to do, but deep down inside he is not happy at all.

Indigenous Exploration – Education

Here is my group’s podcast about Indigenous Peoples Education.

My experience creating this project was very interesting. I learned a lot about what Indigenous Peoples Education was like throughout the years and how Indigenous People were treated. My group’s journey was very good. We found a lot of information about Indigenous Peoples Education and we recorded the podcast in one day. An obstacle we encountered when doing this project is when we wanted to rerecord a little of the ending, both our computers froze and then when they unfroze our script was gone. So, we had about 5 minutes to rewrite the ending of the script and rerecord it before the bell rang. Fortunately, we were able to do it and then return the mic to the classroom. I demonstrated Critical Thinking by overcoming the problem with the script. Me and my partner both found ways to solve that problem together.
