Global Warming and Settlement Patterns in Canada

If global warming were to occur, it would be a problem for Canada.

People tend to want to live on the flatter parts of Canada. They base where they want to live on the temperature, people tend to want to live where it is warmer rather than where it is colder. Money is also a factor of why people choose to live in certain places. If someone is not particularly wealthy, then they will probably choose a place that is easier to afford. People do not seem to care too much about precipitation, a lot of people live in the prairies where it is a little dryer but there are also a lot of people who live near Vancouver in the cordillera region where it is very rainy.

The changes in each region:

The Arctic Region:

There would not be a massive increase in population in the Arctic Region, although it might increase a little bit. However the animal population would decrease. The Arctic Region is extremely cold with snow and snow animals. The Arctic Region warming up even by a couple of degrees would attract a lot of people and make it more appealable to live there. But the global warming would melt the snow and force the animals that live there to leave and try to find a colder habitat.

The Cordillera:

The population would increase a lot if global warming were too occur. The cordillera region already has areas that are relatively warm compared to the rest of Canada. So if global warming were to occur, then a lot more people would come and attempt to cram in to the parts where it is especially warm thanks to global warming. There would also be a lot less job opportunities because everyone would be applying, and if you are lucky then you get it. Another thing would be an increase in homeless people, it would be a lot warmer so anyone who does not have a house would come to live in the Cordillera.

The Interior Plains:

The Interior Plains are the region around the prairies where it is not very warm but it is not too cold, so it it kind of in the middle. If temperatures were to increase it would draw a lot of people into the big cities and towns, but it would put a lot of farmers out of work. It would affect their agriculture and ruin what they farm. So a lot of people would lose their jobs and move to the city, which would make it hard for them to find a new job. There would also be a lot less organic food that is grown near them because there would be hardly and farmers.

Canadian Shield:

In the Canadian Shield it is very cold, but global warming would make it a lot warmer. People tend to want to live in areas that it is warmer so the population in the Canadian Shield would increase by a lot. Even if the population increased a lot, the population would still be a small number compared to other regions, because people do not tend to live in the Canadian Shield region.

St. Lawrence Lowlands

In the St Lawrence Lowlands it is very warm, so just like in the Cordillera, if global warming were too occur then the population would increase by a lot. Just like anywhere else if a population increases then there are a lot less job opportunities and places to live Also the St Lawrence Lowlands is made up of many lakes, which would start to dry up and disappear with global warming.

Appalachians:

The Appalachians is a region that is neither warm nor cold, it is in the middle. However it does not have a big population because there are not many flat lands for people to live because of the rolling hills, valleys, small mountains, highlands, and coastal fjords. So the population would increase, but not by much.
