once we were children
Once we were children.
Free from responsibilities, reliability and technology.
When we were children, we waited for bedtime stories
But now all we wait for is peoples Snapchat stories.
Imagine a world where being pretty as a picture is now required to survive this social media circle.
Is it better to fit in with this social media society or to stand out?
We think that now with these platforms we have to present ourselves as if we had these marvellous
And perfect lives, but in reality, it’s a mask that we put over top of our humanly emotions and issues.
Once we were children,
We enjoyed the rustle of book pages brushing together
And hearing the swoosh of books as we turned to the next page,
Now we enjoy the swooshes of sending text messages.
We listen to when our phone complains about an unopened text message or Snapchat notification,
Then we get the urge to check our phones as if our lives depended on it.
We used to urge to go outside on a rainy day,
To splash in the muddy puddles in our rain boots,
But that has all changed since we were kids.
Instead of face to face communication,
We now use face time and throw away our connection
We used to ask our parents for assistance
But now we rely on google’s persistence.
We turn to technology to help us with our emotions,
And instead, ignore our parent’s devotion while dealing with our mental explosion.
Once we were children
We roared with laughter while running through the grassy fields,
Now we run through the acidic drills brought to you by technology.
We used to want to hold onto our friends as if our life depended on it,
But now we want to hold onto our cellphone lenses as if our Instagram feed depended on it.
Once we were children.
We took life slow,
Like every day, we had sometime to grow,
We managed to look at life just liked it glowed,
But now we are lured and reassured that technology is all for good
But dear technology, I am not so sure that you’ll ever be as obscure as you once were,
because we were once children, and now we’ve grown.
I really enjoyed reading this poem! I think it demonstrates the human condition regarding technology very well.
Shanez – very good integration of the themes in your poem. Good use of rhyme and rhythm.
