Friday Questions – Ruby Maher
- The boys are upset at the idea of the girls carrying the water bucket because the boys feel threatened that the girls are going to take their responsibility away from them. They don’t value the girls as equals and don’t believe that the girls are strong enough or brave enough to carry the water bucket.
2. The strategies the boys use to pressure the girls to give in is that they beat up the girls and excluded them from the softball game. They also threated them and tried to persuade them to give up the idea. The girls were definitely not happy about the way the boys were treating them but still wanted to not give in and stand for what they think is right.
3. The story is told in first person point of view by a girl in the same class as Alma. She seems to respect Miss Ralston very much and is very grateful of the way she stood up for the girls and took Alma’s question about the water seriously. The narrator is not pleased by the way the boys are treating the girls but still wants to stand beside Alma and the other girls in the fight for their rights.
4. The setting takes place somewhere in Eastern Canada in the early to mid 1900’s. The evidence that shows the setting is that a line from the story says that “If one of those German planes, like in the movies, appeared over the school and dropped a bomb”. This shows that the story must have taken place sometime after WWII. Also the story states something about “driving a tractor or playing for the Toronto Maple Leaves”. This shows that the story must have taken place somewhere in Canada. The conflict was person vs. Person because both sides (Boys vs. Girls) were fighting for the same thing (the water bucket).
5. The protagonist is Alma Niles. She is the protagonist because she was the girl to ask the question about the water and she was the person who tried to change tradition.
6. That Friday, the balance of equality changed for the better. After Miss Ralston told the class that “next week, Alma Niles and Joyce Shipley will be going for the water”, she swept her hand on her desk. I believe that this symbolizes satisfaction in the change that she has allowed and pride for the girls and that she has balanced the equality in the classroom. The theme is stating that equality should always be evident and that girls can do just as much as boys can.

Digital Footprint- Ruby Maher
This is a presentation on Digital Footprints and how to keep them safe.
- How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.
Answer: Your digital footprint can affect your future if you use social media and other online sources inappropriately. Future post secondary schools may look in to your online presence as part of their admission process. If you plan to go to college or university after graduation, consider the fact that they might be checking out your digital footprint. Also, future employers will most likely check in to your online presence when they are looking to hire you. If they something inappropriate, they probably won’t hire you.
2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.
Answer: The first strategy that you can use is to keep your social media accounts private and do not allow anyone one to follow you if you do not know them. The second strategy you can use is apply the THINK method before posting anything online ( Is it true, is it helpful, is it inspiring, is it necessary and is it kind). The third strategy you can use is to remember how this could possibly affect you in the future before posting.
3. What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?
Answer: I learned from the video that up to 70% of employers will look into your online presence before they hire you. They suggested that you really filter what you put online. They say to be protective and selective about what you put out there. They also recommended to be very vigilant about your privacy settings. They strongly urge everyone to research themselves to see what is out there for the public to see.
All About Me – Ruby Maher
This paragraph and Sway presentation is an introduction of who I am.
My name is Ruby Maher and I am a thirteen year old, grade nine student at Riverside Secondary School. Almost every day after school, I go to dance at Pulse Dance Center. I have knowledge in many different varieties of dance included “jazz, ballet, acro, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop” and many more. I definitely have a passion for the performing arts and musical theater. Each year, my dance school puts on an extraordinary production that performs publicly at Evergreen Cultural Center for 12 performances in one week. My hobbies definitely include singing, dancing, acting and performing. I have two pets at home, a dark grey French bulldog named Willow and a Syrian hamster named Panda. I do not have any siblings and I live at home with my mom. My favorite place to travel is to Hawaii because of its warm climate and beautiful waters. Almost every spring break, I travel along with my family to somewhere warm and different from the weather in Vancouver at the time. This spring break, we are going to Palm springs. My origin from my mothers side is mostly Irish, British, Danish and French. My dads side is Native Canadian. Every summer, my family and I travel to our summer home in Pender Harbor on the Sunshine Coast. Our cabin sits right on the crisp water of British Columbia. Everyday, while I’m there I go swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding in the harbour. My favourite tv shows definitely include Stanger things, Riverdale and Dance Moms. My favourite celebration of the year would definitely be Halloween. Halloween is my favourite because I love all the chilling Halloween commercials and movies that appear on tv at that time and the day after Halloween is my birthday. One of my biggest accomplishments would be last Halloween at my middle school. Me and my friend Emma raised 445$ from a haunted house that we set up for the school. All the money that we raised, we donated to the BCSPCA. I am definitely someone who loves to give back to her community and help out around me. I hope you learned a little bit about me and about my life.
