Harrison Bergeron is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. The story takes place in 2081, and everyone is finally equal. If one was to be smarter or prettier than the other, he or she shall be equal through the use of physical and mental handicaps. As on may notice after reading this short story, there are many rules and regulations in 2081. Above are just 14 of the 213 amendments, which “helped” create the perfect society. Here is just some of the insane laws that have been created. If one were to take off their handicaps, such as their mandatory sash weights, and birdshots, they will be taken into prison and fined, as expressed in amendment #203 and #209. Amendments #204, #206 and #211 expressed how if one was to be furthermore intelligent than others, he or she shall wear a government radio ear transmitter that makes horrible noses every 20 seconds, also if an individual is above average beauty, he or she will be issued a mask to conceal their attributes at all times. Lastly, large athletic individuals, whether they be female or male, must wear limiting scraps of heavy metal around their body. One amendment that would really attract one’s attentions would be that all handicapper general has the ability and authority to eliminate any individual that goes against or breaks any of the above rules, which will result in death, expressed in amendment #213. In conclusion, this story showed everyone how the future society could possibly turn out to be. Everyone has been created differently and not to be the exact same person, or to have the same characteristics. Take advantage of being intelligent, athletic and beautiful. The future is yet to come, and one is to know what is ahead.
