The Dangers of New Media

Media is a great way to interact with each other and find information, but what is new media and how dangerous it could be? New media is just media, however, compared traditional media is on demand and interactive. An example of New Media is YouTube where one is able to watch anything one might find and be able to interact with likes and comments. With all the media everyone consumes each is very different meaning that everyone’s media consumption is very fragmented with many of using more than one device and going on different websites each day. With the ability to consume media at any time on any device, there are possibilities to consume media in an unhealthy matter such as spending too much time on media or finding websites with bad influence. John Donovan, a long time journalist, mentions in his article There’s a Healthier Way to Consume Your Media, “All sorts of research…points to dangers from too much screen time for kids, too much access to porn, and too much TV can mean too much unhealthy eating” (Donovan 2018). A solution to unhealthy media consumption is to regulate how much time one may spend with media such as creating timers to limit the time they may spend time on media. On the internet there many websites that are tying to mislead or deceive the public which is why it is very important to verify the website to make sure the information is true. To make sure a website is telling the truth one may want to look into the author to see how creditable some of their other work or one might want to look into other resources to make sure the information is accurate. In conclusion, media is a very power tool, but be careful when consuming media.
