To Cory Doctorow
Hi my name is Logan, I’m a High school student and just recently for English we had Literature Circles. I’m glad your book ‘Little Brother’ was an option because I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I found myself engulfed in the pages so much that I would reed ahead of our scheduled reading to see how Marcus would over come the DHS and bring freedom back to the people of San Francisco. I really enjoyed Marcus’s character. At times I would find myself YELLING at him and wanting to travel through the book to give him advice on some of his choices. One time in particular while he was being interviewed on Pages 237-38, he said…
“I’m 17 years old. I’m not a straight-A student or anything. Even so, I figured out how to make an Internet that they can’t wiretap. I figured out how to jam their person-tracking technology. I can turn innocent people into suspects and turn guilty people into innocents in their eyes. I could get metal onto an airplane or beat a no-fly list.”
I found his words inspirational but all Marcus was doing is helping the DHS narrow down possibilities. For the people who don’t know who ‘M1k3y’ is, it makes Marcus sound like a terrorist. The thing is, every time Marcus said and did things I don’t agree with, it made me want to read more to find out the results of his choice. I was wonder what gave you the idea and motivated you to write ‘Little Brother’? Speaking of writing; did you ever get writers block? I always find myself stuck on what I should say next and it takes me longer than it should to articulate my thoughts. Just wondering if you hand any tips or tricks to overcome it? I would also be interested to know how you developed Marcus’s character. Did you base it off someone you know or did you come up with it all on your own? What we’re your hopes for Little Brother? Finely, if you don’t mind me asking, who is Alice? This is starting to get long, for myself I find that I always put off long emails so I will put a close to this. Before I go I just wanted to let you know that your book was one of my favourites and that you should never stop writing.
Have a great day,
Logan R.
