What was one of the greatest challenges you faced this semester? What did you learn from it?
The greatest challenge this semester was keeping myself on top of everything and mentally stable. The past couple of months have been the busiest of my life ever, and I have had to balance, school, a job, The Orbit workshops, university and scholarship applications, aviation lessons, and a personal and social life. My role in the Tech Team was very involved, having appeared in front of the school twice and presenting to my Stream. I became well-known as “the tech kid” and have been providing assistance both in classes and at the Wave. This semester taught me a lot about time management and finding a balance between everything going on. There were rough moments, but I’m ending with many goals accomplished and prospects to look forward to.
What was one big win you had this semester? What did you learn from it?
My big win this semester was my overall large appearance in front of the school. After the grade 9 tech day, I had teachers treating me like a celebrity for the couple following days. I was even recognized at a bubble tea place by a student because of that livestream! It was great to feel like I made an impact at the school. Although the feeling of fame was great, I also learned strategies and ways of talking that can grasp students’ attention and create something memorable.
What can I improve and/or accomplish this semester?
This coming semester, I would like to increase my participation at the Wave in the library. With a busy few months, I found myself drawn away from giving up my time and helping the school, and instead working on assignments in the far corner of the library, away from interruptions. Next semester, however, I have a much lighter workload and know that I will be able to commit all of the time I promised to the Wave. If the Wave Teams becomes more active after the semester change, I know I will be there to offer support.
What is something you want to happen? Focusing on technology and school culture…what would you like to see take place in second semester.
I would like to see the Tech Team get even more involved with the school and make an effort to not appear intimidating to approach. I have noticed that, looking at the messages Rapid Event receives, students are inclined to message us incredible formally and often seem apologetic for asking us to post something, despite it being the purpose of the account. I would love for the tech team and our resources to seem approachable. Our involvement with the school could improve if clubs and groups are not afraid to ask for our help or assistance with their projects.
What is one think you would like to learn more about? Focusing on technology and school culture…what would you like to explore/implement second semester.
This semester, I would like for the Tech Team to advertise the Maker Space as a place open for anybody. Perhaps through a small social media project compiling the various resources available, we can make it known that the space is open for all students to explore and create. Unless a student is in a class that uses it or has heard through word of mouth, they are often intimidated by the space and assume one already needs to have the hard skills in order to use the printers or Cricut machine. Overall, just enforcing a positive learning environment throughout the school can help us get more involved.
