“Split Mouth” by Franny Choi is a very well constructed spoken word. The way the various literary devices are incorporated seems quite genius to me. She uses many metaphors, stringed together with alliteration and repetition. This allows the audience to catch important phrases; ones that really help understand the poem. Not only that, but the meaning behind it is both clearly illustrated but also hidden between the lines. It can be taken literally: Franny dislikes the idea of there being a split in her country, as the people on each side are the same. However, you can also dig much deeper into the emotion behind it. You see her frustration and anger behind the idea of people separating themselves and seeing each other as enemies. In reality, we we really all are the same, so why should the opinions of a few leaders separate us?
