Child Development and Caregiving 12 Core Competency Reflection

CORE COMPETENCY : Communication

The activity I have chosen to reflect on is having a central buddy(s). I chose communication for this experience because the time spent with my buddy was all about connection and creating memories with them, as well as coming up with activities to do together. Most of our time was spent talking about things she liked or was excited for. I listened and showed interest in the things she talked about. Sometimes we could relate to things we both liked or had a common interest in, making for easy, connective conversations. During my experience in the buddy program, I had to come up with an activity for the kids to do. I had to create instructions that were easy to follow and understand. I later had to explain the activity to many children and guide my buddy through it. This experience has taught me ways to instruct, connect, and communicate with kids. I learned how having a toddler or young child might feel and that it is a commitment you have to stay true to.

  1. Connect and engage with others (to share and develop ideas)
    • I encouraged her to talk and I would demonstrate active listening
  2. Acquire, interpret, and present information (including inquiries)
    • I can understand and share information about a topic that is important to me.
  3. Collaborate to plan, carry out, and review constructions
    and activities

    • I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group.
  4. Explain, count, and reflect on experiences and accomplishments
