Digital Footprint

“How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.”

Certain companies and organizations run background checks on the people they are interested in hiring, e.g. police departments. The same thing goes for universities and colleges. Having a clean and appropriate digital footprint is necessary in these cases as we want to show off our strengths and skills, as well as advertise our responsibility and maturity. If for example, one wants to become a police officer, but they follow accounts of gangs on Instagram or have texted dangerous convicts, the police department would decline their resume. Universities and colleges would reject student applications in the same manner.

“Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.”

Be mindful; don’t be outright silly with the decisions you make online. Take into account that future opportunities may/will arise where your digital footprint will be double-checked. Think about if you want others, peers, authority to see what you have amassed online. Refer to THINK (is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind) before posting a post or comment online.

“What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?”

Really just make sure to be mindful with the decisions you make online. Be kind, respectful and honest. Think before you act. If you’re not sure about doing or posting a certain thing, you don’t need to do it!
