Poetry Compare/Contrast and Response

The Negro Speaks of Rivers

By Langston Hughes

Image represents a proud boy, satisfied over his days work almost like the negros in the poem; proud of their history and work, near all the rivers.

  • Structure: Lyrical Free Verse
  • Mood: Wisdom
  • Tone: Reflective
  • Summary and Purpose: I believe the purpose was to demonstrate the histor of Negros, their culture and how they are truly powerful and they should be proud and recognized for their achievements.
  • Theme: Race, History
  • Why it is important: I think Hughes shows how important it is to recognize his culture and identity yet we haven’t as of date, they are a powerful but almost humble nation, this poem makes you think and shows you where your appreciation is lacking.

Yet Do I Marvel

By Countee Cullen

Image represents beginning of suffering in religion which is a very important theme.

  • Structure: Sonnet-Iambic Pentameter, English
  • Mood: Unjustness, Questioning
  • Tone: Ambivilant
  • Summary and Purpose : It is sophisticated, meant to reach those who are. I think that the summary of the poem is simply this; why be punished by being black and a poet. I feel like his final point is questioning why is he given the talent and knowledge to change the world and he has to share it yet he has to struggle to do something good. Why is God being unfair?  He is simply curious, why choose to make him both, “black and sing” but he is not angry or upset he is marveling in what He has done, given.
  • Theme: Suffering, Race, Religion
  • Why it is important: I think this is my favorite poems because it shows how suffering in many cases is a consequence it is also because of something good. It shows the struggle in the overlap of right and wrong. It makes me question a lot, is it good he is suffering because it is motivating him to continue sharing or is it bad because what he is doing is good; I’m reffering to the last line of Cullens poem.
  • Theme Statement: Though suffering may be due to a consequence it can also be due to a good choice or action. To be different and unique, though difficult gives one better understanding and capability to share with others.

Similarities

  • Both poems have very deep allusions, as the culture seems very grounded to history and it’s roots
  • They are both written by African American authors
  • Theme: Race
