Word Problems with Fractions

Tai shares a cake with John, Lenny and Bob, he divides the cake into 9 equal slices. Bob ate 1/2 of a slice, Lenny ate 2 and 1/3 slices, Tai ate 1/3 of the whole cake, John only ate 1/6 of his and everyone else ate one whole slice.

How much cake is left?

9 – 2 1/3 + 1/2 + 1/6 + 3/1
= 9 – 7/3 + 1/2 + 1/6 + 3/1
= 9 – 14/6 + 3/6 + 1/6 + 6/2
= 9 – 36/6
= 3

There is 3 slices of cake left. I found my answer by adding all the fractions of what they ate together and then subtracted the total by the sum of the cake eaten.
