Circle Work

Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story.

History, and stories were passed down from generation to generation. Memory is a very important way for families to learn. Remembering a family members teaching is tradition, and a way of learning things that you have never known. When phones weren’t a thing, it wasn’t as easy to remember things or take photos, so relying on memory and history was the only way to pass down information and stories to the  newer generations. Learning would not be the same if people did not have memories, and if our history was blank. Therefore, learning is connected with all of these three things, memory, history, and stories.

How can this exercise build community?

Learning how to respectfully speak and listen to others can create a stronger community. It’s more difficult but much more meaningful when you are speaking face to face with someone. When others are listening and are open minded, it makes you feel more welcomed and understood. When you communicate respectfully, you get to know other people and create stronger bonds. Being a good listener and speaker can help create a safer community.
