Stuff from Last Week

Last week we presented out group project and I looked at possible patterns in the drawer for the Inquiry Project.

Blast to the Past

For the blast to the past project, we should’ve done a few things differently. I think that we probably needed to do a practice run within the group before doing the actual presentation because there were some things that we could’ve improved on.

1. Slide Design and Transitions

Looking back at the presentation, I realize that our slides designs were a bit too different from each other. If we were to redo the project I think we could work together a bit in the beginning so that the slides are more similar to each other.

Final edits should’ve been done to the power point presentation too because there were a lack of transitions and some of them that were there looked kinda wonky. I probably should’ve done a preview of the power point and adjusted it accordingly. Especially the weird curtain transition I put in, it looked, and was strange.

2. Speech and Pronunciation

This kinda ties in with the “practice run” I mentioned earlier. I didn’t really know how to pronounce Regent and I think I should’ve researched the correct pronunciation for things the things I didn’t know. The other members in our group project also had a bit of trouble with a couple of things.

The paragraphs and writing probably should’ve been proof-read too. Some words and adjectives that were put in were a little bit too flowery or advanced and it was hard to present and say some sections due to it. This also coincides with the “practice run” thing from earlier.

Using simpler words and checking pronunciation on certain things could’ve improved the presentation plenty.

3. Slide Content

The content in the slides were ok but double checking and changing somethings would’ve made the power-point a lot more engaging.

I noticed that a few things in our presentation were in the wrong time period or were already said. I ended up having to go more into detail because some things that happened during the Regency Era was already said.

Some slides were too long. Being more concise, doing less repetition, and adding more creative slides would’ve made it extra engaging.

Summary of Thoughts

Double checking, more research, proof-read, and creativity would have probably made the power-point a lot better.

Mood Board

So far I haven’t done much for the mood board’s completion. I don’t really like the project personally because finding the right fabric shades and having to work with a large foam board isn’t too appealing for me. I think that if we were allowed to do the project digitally it would give us more freedom because we would be able to find virtually any shades of colour and textures for the project.

I attempted to do the project a few weeks back but I found that we didn’t have enough choices or options. Stuff that was colourfully correct were made of weird textures or fabrics at times. The problem that is that there aren’t enough choices. This limits what colour schemes/combinations I am able to use.

The mood-board project is a fundamentally good tool for designing. The constraints of the classes fabric selection however, prevents the mood-board from being very useful.

Inquiry Project

Not much extra have been done in terms of planning the project last week because I already did a bunch of planning earlier.

Last week I’ve been trying to find a good pattern online as a base for the jacket project but found that most of them costed money. Sooo because of that I ended up looking through our class patterns and ended up finding a pretty cool-ish looking one.

The pattern that I found is in very good condition and looks like it has never been used before, so it should be easy to cut and mark the fabric. The pattern paper contains multiple different projects in it so I have to make sure that I use the right ones, I’ll probably have to double check since the pattern is kinda complex-y. Luckily, one of those ‘different projects’ includes a liner, so adjusting and editing it to be removable should hopefully not be too hard.

One of the things that might be an issue in the future is the lack of hood in the pattern. I might have to edit or adjust the main body or collar of the pattern in the future or maybe I wont, I’ll figure it out later.

The sewing rooms selection of fabric doesn’t really have the kind I want/need. I already have a lining fabric at my house from another thing I made and also foam/cotton sheets for the insulated liner. I need to buy fabric for the outer layer of the jacket, and also buttons/zippers from the store. We didn’t really have any good colours for the outer shell of my project, or buttons/zippers that I particularly liked.

Organizing and figuring out how to use and adjust the pattern will probably be the hardest and most time-consuming part of the project so It’s likely that I’ll end up working on it during winter break.

Things to Research

There are some things I’m not 100% sure how to do within the pattern. One of them are welt pockets. I’m planning on getting really cheap unbleached cotton or something cheap that kinda mimics the drape of what I am going to make the final project with and making a test-run with the cheap fabric so I can get a mental map of how everything fits together.

Researching and finding patterns for the hood and removable liner will also be needed. If I can’t find any patterns or if I don’t like them, I think I can get the dimensions and sizes of some other jackets I have and copy those hoods. For the removable lining, I can probably just edit the liner in the original pattern and attach some zippers or buttons.
