The following is an example I created of a monologue for the character of Biff from “Death of a Salesman.”
This is a monologue because it describes Biff’s emotions as he goes through life with his parents from being the son that they adored to the son that faces defeat at every corner he turns
This monologue would fit in the current plot when Biff confides to Happy what he truly felt after Happy left and became successful
Biff: I am a disappointment to my family. I can never get myself to become the son that my family wanted me to be. Back then I was at my prime. I had confidence and poise. I could do whatever I want, whenever I want. I was a player who would bounce from one game to another without a care in the world, but now I am a philandering bum who bounces from one job to the next and always goes home empty-handed. Back then I always saw the smiles from my family, especially from my father, who was jubilant of the person I was. I felt warm and happy around him, but now, all I feel is sadness and anger emanating from across the thin walls of the house. He keeps telling me to grow up and be a man, while my mother tells me to find myself, but I do not know who I am. I am lost. My family is going through tough times and needed all the help it could get. It does not matter whether I become a shipping clerk, salesman, or any businesses of any kind because whenever I see the reflection of myself from my father’s eyes, I will always be a failure.
