Before Canada developed into a civilized country that it is today, it had a dark past. One of the many aspects that made Canada a morbid country was the Capital Punishment. Capital Punishment was established in Upper and Lower Canada in 1865. This law sentences any offender who committed crimes of murder, treason, and rape to death after being convicted. This law was modified throughout the years until it was abolished in 1976. In the story “Two Fishermen,” Thomas Delaney was convicted of murder after killing Matthew Rhinehart. He was sentenced to a death penalty, thus ending his life by hanging. If the story is based in Canada, it would have taken place in the 1960s where Capital Punishment is only restricted to murder, treason, and rape.
In the “Two Fisherman,” Thomas Delaney was hanged for murdering Matthew Rhinehart. I personally think that he should not have been hanged for committing such a crime. Thomas should not have been killed because he was only protecting his loved ones. Although his actions were unjustifiable, people should not resort to a barbaric method such as hanging to solve a problem because there are several methods that are better than Capital punishment. Imprisonment is a better method than Capital punishment because it gives people a chance to rehabilitate and turn their lives around. Thomas only committed one crime, and that is because he is defending his wife.
