Rules of the Game Summary

In San Francisco’s Chinatown, there lived a young girl named Waverly Jong. She was just an ordinary girl until her life changed as her brother Vincent receives a chess set. Waverly became very interested in chess and decides to give it a try. She started exploiting the chess’ secrets with his friend Lau Po and got the chance to compete in a chess tournament. She gladly accepted it and gained many victories from it. Her mother became very proud of her and showed it by telling everybody about the fantastic daughter that she has standing right beside her. Of course, a child like Waverly would feel what they always felt when it comes to a situation such as this: embarrassment. She abruptly told her mother that this was not nice. It agitated her mother as she tightened her grip around Waverly’s hand. Waverly jerked it off and bumped at a woman carrying groceries. Both of them became very upset, and Waverly took off because she could not bear to feel anymore embarrassment than what her mother has set upon her. Hours later, she returned home where the whole family was upset about Waverly’s actions. She went to her bedroom and imagined her opposite self and her in a chess battle. While her opposing self is defeating her, Waverly started imagining herself flying into the sky. Upon reaching solitude, she then ponders her next move.
