Advertising Target Markets

In this commercial, Extra, a gum company, advertises their spearmint flavor gum using something almost akin to a sad short film. This advertisement’s target audience is rather general, as people who consume gum tend to be rather varied. However, based on the people depicted in this ad, it is most likely trying to target daughters and fathers, as those are the two shown in this ad having a strong bond show using the little origami birds the father would make for his daughter out of the wrapper from the gum. The commercial uses a couple techniques, but two of the more notable ones it uses are both emotional appeals, plain folks and humor. Plain folks is probably the most obvious one out of the two I’ve mention, as the father and daughter depicted in this ad are shown to be just a plain, normal family. There’s never anything extra ordinary about the family shown or brought up, it’s just a small, down to earth father and daughter, with the father liking to make small origami birds out of gum wrappers for his daughter. The second one may not feel as obvious or apparent, possibly even out of place to mention, and that is humor. This ad is designed to be sad, it is designed to pull at people’s heartstrings and make them cry, so how is it humorous? It’s humorous because of the title given to it, “Can A Gum Commercial Make You Cry?”. The title is humorous in the sense that it’s acknowledging the fact that this commercial is supposed to be sad, as well as challenging you to watch it and see if you cry. Overall, this commercial does it’s job well, it implants the image of the product in your head and gets you thinking about it without being super obvious about it and making the ad something someone would stop to watch instead of ignoring it or doing something else.
