In English, I learned that humans are excellent at creating ways to overcome hardship.  In Sugar Falls Betty overcomes her hardship at the Residential School by forming a relationship with her friend Flora.  She talked to her friend Flora when she wasn’t feeling that good about the Residential School.  Betty also remembered what her father taught her, to help her with her problems at the Residential School.  Last Betty vowed to do well by working on her penmanship in “Sugar Falls.”  In Indian Horse Saul survives the St. Jeromes Residential School by being silent and just going with what is going on in the Residential School and he gets into the Moose Hockey Team, he uses what the Kellys told him when he is having trouble with hockey.  In “Joy Kogawa” the main character copes with moving to the Japanese Internment camp through the relationship with her parents.  The dad tells the main character that they are going on an exciting trip and mom comforts her by wrapping a blanket around her.  The main character also copes with the move by distracting herself with a puzzle.  In all three stories relationships were the main source of strength of the characters to overcome hardship.  It is incredible to think of all the ways that humans can cope with their different types of hardships in their lives.
