“Father and Son” Plot Point Photos

1) Exposition
Quote: “I love him so much it hurts but he won’t talk to me. He tells me nothing”(Maclaverty 1)

Explanation: The quote I have for exposition introduces the two main characters, Father and Son. The Father has already lost his wife and is scared to lose his son. The father doesn’t eat and you can assume he has anxiety. All he wants is to talk to his son. On the other hand you meet the son who wants nothing to do with his father and has previously left his home for 2 years

2) Inciting Incident
Quote: “Wake up, son. I’m away to my work. Where are you going today?
“What’s it to you”
“If I know what your doing I don’t worry as much”
“Shit”

Explanation: This quote for Inciting incident starts off the conflict with the Father and Son fighting when all the Father asked was a question. The conflict started when the father asked if the son is doing anything then the son got mad and flipped out at his did which was wrong. This conflict made an even bigger gap between the Father and Sons’ relationship.

3) Rising Action
Quote: “I pulled you away from death once and now you won’t even talk to me. I want to know if you’re in danger again”

Explanation: This quote is the trigger of rising action as the tension builds up between the father and son. You hear that the son has already been close to death and the father doesn’t want that to happen again. The son neglects the father and doesn’t answer the question which is scaring the father.

4) Rising Action
Quote: “Son, you are living on borrowed time”

Explanation: When the father says this to the son the rising action and the tension grow. The father is implying that the son will not always be around if he keeps living his life with the choices he makes. The father just wants to love the son and care for him but the son wants different and neglects him.

5) Rising Action
Quote: “Let me put my arms around your shoulders and let me listen to what is making you thin”

Explanation: The rising action of the story is when th father asks his son if he can put his arms around his son and ask what is hurting and dragging his son down

6) Climax
Quote: “Perhaps I need to show him more love, care for him more than I do”

Explanation: The climax of the story is when the father realizes that he needs to love his son more. He was always talking about how he’ll talk to his son tomorrow except he kept on procrastinating. If the father ever wants to make progress with his relationship with is son he needs to take initiative, cause if some thing ever happens to the son before the father tries to mend the relationship he wouldn’t be able to live with himself

7) Falling Action
Quote: “There is a bang. A dish-cloth drops from my hand and I run to the kitchen door”

Explanation: The climax of the story is when the father is washing dishes and he hears a bang. He didn’t know if it was his son in trouble, or his son putting someone else in danger. He rushed to the door and found his son dead. This is the major point of the story cause if there was no conflict and fighting between the family this would have never happened.

8) Denouement
Quote: “My son, let me put my arms around you”

Explanation: The denouement of the story is when his son is dying in his hands and all he wants to hug him. Even though the son could not answer the fathers question, he would have wanted his father to put his arms around him. In the last bit of the story the father and son were talking but not much. The father has already lost his wife and he sadly just lost his son so all he wants is to put his arms around his son.
