First Edublog Post – Orthographic Projection

The object I created plans for is an iPhone 6s. The plans I created are using an orthographic projection which is when an object depicted using parallel lines to project its shape. The 3 displays used to depict the object is the front view, top view, and right view. The plans also show an isometric projection which is a method for visually representing three dimensional objects in two dimensions in technical and engineering drawings.

Fifth of November

The poem The 5th of November is about an anarchist and terrorist trying to topple the British government. The poem addresses social issues of feelings of dissatisfaction with someone’s own government. The narrator of the poem is the anarchist that wishes to perform these acts of terrorism. The poem was written in 1870 so one is to assume that the timeframe for this is also 1870. The words of the poem appears to be free of cliches and concrete in its meaning. The poem has a serious tone in the beginning, and in the latter half of it switches to a sarcastic telling of how much the narrator loves the King and political situation of Britain.

Picture Choice

1. The main focus of this poem is remembering the 5th of November, and since this poem is quite literal I wanted to find a literal representation
2. In Historical context this particular gunpowder plot involved putting “threescore” barrels below so we wanted to find a basement filled with barrels of gunpowder to show the extent of this plot
3. The Author believes that the event is so significant to history that he can literally not think of any reason to forget that the event happened
4. The now infamous hacker group Anonymous uses the Guy Fawkes mask as a way to seem like a giant group of the same person, this is what Guy and his group of anarchists did back in the 1600’s and we wanted to show that
5. The plan that Guy Fawkes and his group came up with was so outlandish and almost impossible to succeed we thought the only way to convey that was a Bond villain looking person scheming
6. The plot to overthrow the government was a very simple and emphatic plan, which was to blow up the British House of Commons, and House of Lords and we just wanted to show what that might look like
7. With the amount of gunpowder they had hidden under the parliament, it wouldn’t have looked as bad as this nuclear mushroom cloud but it would’ve been pretty close
8. As we stated earlier the plot to destroy parliament was hoped to be achieved using threescore (30) barrels of gunpowder and this is a modern day representation of what the basement of parliament looked like all those years ago
9. The anarchists wanted to prove that England was old, out of date, corrupt and inert, and they thought blowing it up would do that, this is what the town square adjacent to parliament would’ve looked like back in 1605
10. As they were Catholic they believed that most of their life and the decisions and things that happened in it were all a result of god, and so they believe that god is punishing them for being violent by getting caught, the mugshot is just the most stereotypical image we think of when we think arrest so that’s why we picked it
11. This is the point in the story after they are caught where Guy Fawkes himself starts talking about his process of Punishment and what happened to him, started with them lighting a match with an old lantern
12. Next it tells of how they start tying Guy Fawkes to the stake and light in on fire, thus burning him at the stake, the picture is from a different trial but it would look similar
13. When they say “ for King James sake” this is referring to King James I as he was the first Protestant king of Great Britain and was the main cause of the “corrupt” government, as a result the burners, say that his death was for the King’s Sake, the picture being an image of King James
14. Guy then says, while he is being burned, that if the British government won’t give him one half of the legislative branch of government (the House of Commons) he’ll take both of them( being the Commons as well as the House of Lords) the image showing the act of stealing 2 instead of taking the one the refuse to give him
15. Guy is saying that this will end being worse for the government (which he’s right about), this is represented by the ripe fruit
16. Guy continues his statement form earlier and now is saying that government not giving him 1 will actually end up better for him as well as worse for the government (which he is again right about), which is represented by the rotten fruit
17. This part of the poem is again the author talking to the British people again, this time in the 1870’s, when the poem was written, The noose shows the fact that the Protestant church and the Protestant government wanted to hang the pope and kill him as he is the highest ranking member of the Catholic Church
18. The author is now mocking the Protestant leaders, who were actually mocking the popes extensions riches and wealth by saying that they will feed him well before they hang him
19. The beer was symbolic as it was a very rich and have people drink, the pope being the most have at the time and the government being opposed to that was using as a crown of thorns of sorts
20. Even after they hang the pope for a while after this on November 5th they would burn Guy Fawkes and Catholic effigies as a way of remembrance and sign of the dominance of Protestantism in England
21. Often in England when there is a celebration the bells on Big Ben would ring and as the government viewed thwarting this plot as a success, they rung the bells every year for the next 250 years, these are some of the old bells from and old clock tower in London
22. The national anthem of Britain is God save the … so they sang this a lot as you can imagine as the government viewed this as a hug proud moment
23. Finally, as I’ve said it was a big celebration and there were government sponsored celebrations in order to commemorate it until the 1880’s

Music Choice

The music matches the explosive tempo of the poem as well its been featured in the movie that was made based on this poem

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England’s overthrow.
But, by God’s providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James’s sake!
If you won’t give me one,
I’ll take two,
The better for me,
And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn’orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

Archimedes Challenge: Catapult

The catapult is an invention made by the ruler of Syracuse, Dionysius the Elder. It was made in 400 BC, and was used as a weapon for war. It was used in historical battles until about the 14th century. When the 14th century came around people had invented gun powder and they could make guns and cannons that could fire faster and stronger than a catapult. The catapult became obsolete shortly after. There were also other people in history that had created a variant of the catapult. The Romans made a catapult called the ballista. The ballista was different because it was made like a giant crossbow. It would fire giant arrows and stakes. There was also the trebuchet made in 300 BC by the Chinese. A trebuchet uses a counter weight and gravity to fire the weapon while the other two use elastic force.

Day 1 : I wasn’t there for the first day since I was writing a test.

Day 2: we created a design for our catapult and figured out what materials we would need.

Day 3: we made the base for the catapult and redesigned our plans for the actual mechanism.

Day 4: we finished the top of our catapult and mended a few errors, like when we fired the top of the catapult broke off.

Our catapult was powered by elastic force, with the elastics being attached to both the base of the catapult and the throwing arm. When someone pushes down on the throwing arm, it stretches the elastics creating potential elastic energy. When the arm is launched, a lot of the stored energy is lost with the acceleration, leaving it with no force after the projectile leaves the holder. The frame of the catapult uses triangles because it is one of the strongest shapes and let’s the force be distributed throughout the machine better.

Capital Punishment

What is capital punishment? Capital punishment is the death penalty given to criminals who have murdered someone. The history of capital punishment in Canada began in 1865, where people who had committed murder, treason, or rape were sentenced to death. In 1961, the murder was classified into capital and non-capital offences. The sentence of hanging became mandatory and it was the only method used for capital punishment in Canada. In 1962, the last death sentence in Canada was given to two convicts. The two convicts were Arthur Lucas and Robert Turpin, with Lucas being convicted of murdering an informer and witness in racket discipline, which was already premeditated, and Turpin was convicted of murdering a police officer to avoid getting arrested, was was not premeditated. They were double hanged in December 11, 1962, at the Don jail in Toronto, Ontario as the last convicts in Canada. After the last execution was held, capital punishment was limited to killing of prison guards and police officers. Soon in 1976 capital punishment got removed from Canadian criminal code. The bill was passed by the House of Commons and instead, they replaced the mandatory life sentence, which only lasted for 22 years. And after 22 years, in 1998, they completely removed capital punishment and replaced it with life imprisonment and decided it will not be imposed anymore.

In the short story Two Fishermen, Thomas Delaney got hanged by killing a man who molested his wife. However, things would have ended differently if this story was based in Canada. We can assume that the setting of the story was most likely based in early to mid 1900’s, since the death penalty was removed in the mid 1900’s.

In the short story Two Fishermen, Thomas Delaney kills Matthew Rhinhart who molested his wife and as a result, he gets hanged for his crime. But does Thomas Delaney actually deserves to be hanged for killing a person who tried to rape his wife? Although he has committed murder, I believe that an ‘eye for an eye’ is never the right answer. I believe that the best result would have been a life sentence.

Freshslice Pizza Food Review

Yelp: Freshslice is one of the best pizza places to have ever existed and I am glad to call it the restaurant I go to the most.

Bryn Tomlins

Freshslice, More Like Bestslice

Freshslice Pizza is one of the few joys I get in life. The quick and easy pickup, the greasy hot food, the cheap prices, all of these add up to make Freshsclice Pizza one of the best things in my life. The service at Freshslice Pizza isn’t a problem, but also isn’t helping you all that much. The employees at Freshslice tend to be teens working for minimum wage, so your best interests aren’t usually on their minds. Although the service isn’t the best in world, it isn’t the draw of Freshslice Pizza, if you’re going to get pizza, the service isn’t your top priority. The taste of the pizza is the true draw. And honestly, Freshslice is some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. The pizza is always has just the right amount of grease to make it delicious but not enough to kill you. The quality of the food at Freshslice is higher than most other pizza places, and I believe it has to do with the dedication of the employees to maintain that authentic Freshslice feel. They also serves a variety of soft drinks and juices for you to have while chowing down on the greasy pizza from heaven. The feel of the restaurant when you first enter it welcomes you with the exciting aroma fresh pizza. The menu is on display for everyone to see right when they walk in, making you feel like you can take your time choosing what you want. The décor is usually nothing to right home about, it usually just looks pretty generic and normal. If you’re lucky though, you may have an outside eating area, and Freshslice is always best served outside on a sunny day with one of your buds. The price is one of the major selling points for this amazing pizza, it is inexpensive and will barely dent your wallet. The normal meal of two slices and a soft drink only costs five dollars and is enough for most people. Overall, Freshslice is an amazing place to get cheap and amazingly tasty food. It’s obviously not an everyday food, but every now and then, if you can, you should get yourself some Freshslice.

20 Time Project Final Post

This is the final post for my 20% project. I made a stop motion video of a fight between me and a friend of mine. Some of the new things I learned during this project is how to use Final Cut Pro in a new way. I also learned how to manage time better because I had to organize getting two other people to help me with it.

20 Time Project Update 2

I know all the actors that will be in my stop motion video now, as well as have all the necessary equipment to make it. I have figured out the location for the video to be made, now all I need to do is find a day with the appropriate weather that meets everyone’s schedules. I plan on having the video last around 2-3 minutes. There will be no talking in it, but I will put in background music and might even add sound effects if they  are appropriate for the video. I’m not sure how many frames I will have in a second, but from what I’ve seen, 12 is a good amount, for it doesn’t require as many photos and also doesn’t look incredibly choppy.

20 Project Update 1

For my 20 percent project I am making a stop motion video. I so far know what I am going to make and have all the necessary items to make it. I am now just waiting for a good day to start making it.

I want to make a stop motion fight that lasts around 2 minutes. I was going to have the fight be between myself and one of my friends, with someone else taking the photos. In class, I have been looking at different stop motion styles, to help think of different things I am able to do in my own project. I plan to have started taking the photos in the next week or two.  The process of taking the photos will have to be done in 1 day, so weather changes don’t affect the way the stop motion looks.
