The Human Condition.

In the novel Out Of My Mind ( by Sharon Draper), Melody an 11 year old girl has cerebral palsy and is stuck in her mind because she can’t talk or control the movement of her body. While she is probably the smartest girl in her school she is stuck in a special Ed where she learns her ABC’s and 123’s everyday. Of course she already knows these but she can’t express her feelings to move to a more challenging class. When Melody gets a new aide, Catherine, she has finally found someone who really takes the time learn about Melody. She quickly realizes that Melody is extremely gifted and they purchase her a special computer that allows her to communicate with others so she can go on to do classes more suited to her. Humans can be ignorant and quick to judge. We need to learn that it takes time to get to know someone and that first impressions aren’t everything. This novel shows us that when you take the time to get to know someone they can become so much more than what you thought they were capable of.
