Exploring Quadratic Functions

  1. The form of a quadratic function is f(x) = ax2 + bx + c
  2. b) The parabola is perfectly symmetrical on either side of the y axis and it continues to infinity shaped like a “U”.
  3.  a) The graph is shown with having the parabola below the x axis, almost as if it has been reversed from when a>0, which looks like an upside down “U”.   i) There is a maximum point where the line intersects with an axis (x or y).  b)  i) There is a maximum point where the line intersects with an axis (x or y).   c) The parabola is once again symmetrical along the y axis and the lowest point the line reaches is (0,0) with the “U” facing upwards. The line continues to infinity as well.   d) When a>1, the parabola’s width gets smaller and smaller as the number is increases.
  4. When a is negative, the vertex is minimum. When a is positive, the vertex is maximum.
  5. The graph does not chance when b changes.
  6. The graph does not change when c changes.
