Surface Area of a Sphere

Posted in Math 10

I did this experiment with Wendy and we found out the surface area of a sphere was 4πr^2. We cut an orange in half and then traced as many circles as we could with both halves, then we peeled the orange and filled in as many circles as we could with the peels, leaving no blank spaces and no overlapping. We could only fill four circles and after checking with other groups we determined 4 was the only answer people got.

Since we know the area of a circle, we just multiplied that by 4 because of the 4 circles we filled, giving us the formula 4πr^2.
