Pouvoir !

How Things Work – Geothermal Heat Pumps

The in-floor heating of our house

Geothermal heating is an idea that sets out to give a good alternative to normal furnace heating. Geothermal heat pumps are meant to offer a energy efficient form of heating that works for any space. The idea is that the only power it uses is electricity, and this can be used to year-round heat and cool your house. If you don’t need to pay for the expensive and fluctuant oil/gas prices you can make back that money that you’re saving

The Compressor

The first part of a geothermal heat pump is the well. In our model we have a vertical well, which would go down in a closed loop up to 500 feet down in the ground, but in other designs It can have horizontal well(b) which is approximately 5-10 feet below the surface, but would be spread out across a larger horizontal range. There is another option which is called an open well. These wells are also really deep in the ground and pump ground water to the heat pump, then return it back into the ground. These wells are filled with antifreeze or water, which circulates around the closed circuit and is naturally heated to a temperature of approximately 10 degrees. This may not seem that hot, but this is where the heat pump comes in. The heated antifreeze is run past another closed loop of liquid refrigerant, transferring the little heat it has to the refrigerant. In the winter, the liquid refrigerant is run into an electric compressor which turns the refrigerant into a gas and makes it extremely hot,up to 65 degrees. Then, this gas is put into a coil. Turning those coils hot. Then, outside air is sucked in and blown across the coils, and into the house. The air cools the refrigerant and turns it back into its liquid form, and the cycle continues. During the summer, the process can create cold air to cool down the house, simply by reversing the flow of the refrigerant.

The Expansion Valve

Geothermal Pumps are a energy efficient, low maintenance, source of heat. Geothermal heat pumps are also really economically friendly as they produce almost no pollution or negative effects on the earth. However there are also some downsides to investing in geothermal heating, like the cost. Upfront prices range from 10,000 to 20,000 dollars. These prices can double if you are putting one of these systems in an old house that doesn’t already have it. the hope is of course that the hefty upfront cost will pay for itself with enough use. This isn’t that hard because unlike normal furnaces or heating systems, geothermal heating can be used to heat the smallest of houses to the biggest warehouses or commercial areas.

The Condenser

I believe it solves the environmental issue, providing more than sufficient heat with almost no added cost of fuel like gas or oil, however, it does have a huge upfront price as previously mentioned. If there was a lesser cost and a way to implement this in preexisting buildings, I think that it would for sure complete its task, but as it stands today, it serves as a good “mid ground” before we get to the ideal end game solution.

LUKE & BRADENS PERIODIC TABLE – The 6 D’s of Solution Fluency

Fresh Look At The Periodic Table

  1. DEFINE:
  • How can we change and/or improve the current periodic table design?
  • What are the most important patterns and sorting systems to keep?
  • Which patterns can we sacrifice?
  1. Dream:
  • The periodic table as it stands tells us:
  • How protons each element has
  • The atomic weight of each element
  • The electrons in the outermost shell
  • the similar elements
  • how reactive/ dangerous they are.
  • If they are a metal or not
  • If they are in liquid, solid or gas form
  • How could we change the current design?
  • We could sort it alphabetically by symbol
  • We could sort it alphabetically by element name
  • We could use shapes to tell the state (gas, liquid, solid)
  • We could use colour to show the electrons, or a property of an element at a glance
  1. Design: Our group plans to create a wheel design, dividing metals and non-metals to different sections, and sub categories into smaller sections. We will have the sub categories arranged in the same as the order on the current periodic table (Noble gasses next to alkali medals… etc.) individual elements are sorted according to atomic number within these sub-categories. We will be using colours to show the electrons in the valence shell.

4. Deliver: This is what we’ve come up with so far. As you can see all of the rules and patterns previously stated have been                 implemented, except the sub categories for metal, because of a small error where we put the elements in the wrong order. At the top left      of our periodic table, you can see a legend for what colours mean how many electrons there are in the valence shell.

  1. Debrief: In a perfect world, we would have not made the mistake involving the metals subcategories of course but we would have also made a fourth layer to our periodic table which would show all of the “stats” of the elements.

How Can We Control Evolution?

What is evolution?

Evolution is the process of changing certain characteristics of a species over generations. Evolution is the reason we are related to monkeys and birds are related to dinosaurs. It is based on the idea that all species are related and have just gradually changed over time.

Evolution is caused by how creatures traits interact with the environment that they are in.

How can we control it?

Based on what I’ve learned, I believe that the fastest way to evolve would be using natural selection. We can use this to our advantage to manipulate the way genes are spread throughout the generations.

If we wanted to mutate/evolve for example an immunity to Tuberculosis, a large amount of people would have to be subjected to Tuberculosis, and all of those who didn’t get the symptoms would have to reproduce to pass on the genes. Obviously, this isn’t exactly ethically correct, but if we want to control natural selection, I think that this is the best solution.

This picture depicts the process of natural selection, and what we would be trying to accomplish in the experiment. As you can see, those with a low resistance/a biological trait that we don’t want, are removed from the experiment, to give us a “perfect” final population.

In this video, Primer creates a simulation in which these creatures have to compete for food to survive, reproduce, and mutate to gain evolutionary traits that can help them survive.

Digital Learning

  1. How can we control evolution, how does dna get passed down, how does natural selection work…
  2. Word, Grammarly, EasyBib, Google scholar, commons.wikimedia.org, and YouTube.
  3. First i started with a gale search to see if there was anything that could help me there, and when there was none, i took to google to find some info, I needed to verify the information, so i clicked on the authors name and investigated the site. I also looked some of them up to see if they were real.
  4. Finding the author and looking him / her up, checked multiple sources and sleuthing through the cite. I used EasyBib to cite my sources.
  5. Completing this was pretty easy, mostly because I had used all of the resources in the past. I could have done better by making more in depth answers for the questions and maybe used more/better sources.
