Making Changes in Canada

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of pressure groups/lobbyists, petitions and civil disobedience as ways to make change in your world.  Use specific examples from cases studied in the text and in class to highlight your arguments. (3 Paragraphs)  pg 290-296

Using a pressure group/lobbyists can be a very effective way of educating or pressuring the government to make the changes that you want.  The advantage of this method is you’re are hiring professionals that do this for a living, so they are very good at it.  The problem with this method is it is very expensive.  Lobbyist are usually hired by industries, for example, the Banks have lobbyists.  Or they are hired by a group of large companies, like in the NAFTA example.  This lobbyist group was very well funded and actually spend a lot of money to sway the voters.

A petition is another method you can use when trying to effect change.  There are specific guidelines and rules to follow, it has to be written a certain way and it has to be something that either the Parliament of Canada, the House of Commons or the Government of Canada has authority over, it has to have a minimum of 25 signatures if it’s on paper and a minimum of 500 if its summited electronically.  Although the petition process can be time consuming, it does not require a lot of money, therefore the process is available for everyone.  Plus if your petition gets a lot of signatures, the government has address it.

Civil disobedience is another method people use to try and effect change. For example in the “Desmond case” the black people were not allowed to sit on the main floor of the theatre, they had to sit in the balcony instead.  Desmond wanted to sit on the main floor but wasn’t allowed because of her skin colour so she sat on the main floor anyway and was soon arrested and dragged out.  The advantage of doing this is it brings a lot of attention toward the situation but the disadvantages are Desmond was injured while being dragged from the theatre by the police, she was charged and convicted and had to pay a fine.
