The Interview: (ask your host these questions)
1. What is your job title? Tow Truck operator
2. What is your job description? Operate Tow truck
3. What are the duties and/or tasks you perform at your job? 90% of the time I’m rescuing people. 8% cleaning up accidents. 2% is impounds.
4. What qualifications do you have for this job in the following areas:
a) training? On the job.
b) education? Basic understanding of cars and how they work.
c) experience? 3-4 weeks with another driver (just like how I[Avery] am today.) Then if that go’s well, then you’re put in a truck and you haul scrap cars. Then for a period of time (flexible)you will be doing as said until a spot opens up as well as if you are responsible enough.
d) skills and attributes (personal qualities)? Safe defensive driver, effective anger management skills, successful risk management, clear communication
5. What are some of the things you like about the job? 90% of the time is running around rescuing people.
6. What are some of the things you dislike about this job? Impounds. Well, there are exceptions though.
7. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so? As cars get more complex the requirements of an operator will too.
Student Reflections:
1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):
a) Pays well
b) Good part time job for summer for when I’m in college, university or one of the higher grades (11,12)
c) Most of the time you’re going around helping people.
2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
a) Long Hours
b) There are better full-time jobs.
c) some jobs are taking people’s cars away.
3. Is this job for you? Why or why not? Mainly no, because it’s a good part-time job but, there are jobs that I’d prefer for a full-time job. The hours are very long and it’s a long commute. I like the idea of helping people, but I am not interested in that type of work. Sometimes there are jobs where you just take peoples cars away (impounding) which is an exception to when you are doing good.
4. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?). It shows you the inner workings of a job as well as the day to day happenings. TOKTW has shown me that I do not want to pursue a career in tow truck operations as a full time job. By spending the day at work with my dad, I have learned more about his job and gained more respect for his work. I am looking forward to Planning 10 because I currently have no idea what I want to do for post-secondary school.
