Week 18 – June 15th 2023 – Baby shorts, Maintenance project

Before

During

After

This week I worked on my baby shorts and did the maintenance project. A struggle was folding all there fabric (there was a lot). A success was when we finally finished and saw the difference we made. Next week I hope to finish my baby shorts.

  1. Studio Maintenance Identification– Identify a section of the clay studio that requires maintenance and take a photo of it. What is the name of the  item, space, product, or tool? What is this item, space, product, or tool used for? What does it look like, versus how it should look like : The cream colour/white cabinet was super messy.
  2. Division of Tasks and Process– How will you collaboratively maintain this area? Who will do what? Take process images of the maintenance going on. At least 3 photos of you and your team doing work: Me, Emma, and Sophia will clean and organize it. We all emptied it out tother, Emma and Sophia mostly folded and I put them back in the cabinet. WE also put smaller scraps into a bin for quilting.
  3. Completion of Maintenance– Once you have maintained an item, space, product, or tool, take completion images. How has the maintenance of this item contributed to the classroom or environment? It is now easier to view all of the fabric which will make finding fabric much easier causing less unnecessary repurchasing of products and therefore less waste of fabric and supplies.

Week 17 – June 8th 2023 – Crocheting top and starting baby shorts

This week I also worked on the top, then took a break to start my baby shorts. A struggle I had was trying to cut the fabric as it was hard since the roll is so large. A success I had was when I found the perfect fabric. Next week I hope to work on my shorts more.

Week 16 – June 1st 2023 – Crocheting top

This week I started crocheting a top. I found a tutorial on youtube and used that as reference. A struggle I had was when I measured wrong and had to undo the top :(. A success I had was when I actually was able to find a tutorial on the right shirt (I originally just got inspired by a picture on pintrest). Next week I hope to get more done on the top.

Week 15 – May 25th 2023 – Crocheted flower cupholders for car, made heart pillow

This week I crochet pink and yellow flower cupholders for my friends car (I already made some for my own previously so i knew how to). I also sewed a heart shaped pillow. A struggle I had was measuring and making sure they were the right size. A success I had was when they ended up working out and I counted the stitches right. Next week I hope to crochet a top.

Week 14 – May 18th 2023 – Finished second bag and made a garbage can for car

This week i finished up my second bag (and didn’t sew it so skinny this time) and made a quilted garbage can for my car. A struggle I had was that the batting kept moving around while sewing. A success was when It all worked out and ended up actually being a garbage can. Next week I hope to crochet something.

Week 13 – May 11th 2023 – Finishing quilted bag and started another

This week I finished my quilted bag but was unhappy with how it turned out and made another one (which had many improvements from the other). A struggle I had was how to sew the zipper and also I sewed the bag to be to tall and skinny. A success was when i was able to sew over the zipper and make it look better on the second bag. A goal for next week is to do another inquiry project.

Week 12 – May 4th 2023 – Quilting my bag/inquiry #2

<<example

This week I did some alterations on my dress and started the quilting for a makeup bag that I hope to make (examples above). A struggle I had was keeping the stitches an even distance apart. A success I had was when I found the perfect fabric that i really liked for the bag. Next week I hope to sew the bag together.

Week 11 – April 27th 2023 – Made a dress/inquiry #1

This week I got to work on my inquiry projects and made a dress for my inquiry project. Emma had already printed the pattern since we were making the same dress so i get straight to sewing. A struggle i had was when the bias tape stretched out the edges. A success was when I decided to to use two colors of bias tape since there wasnt enough to make it all one colour. Next week I hope to make a quilted bag like i have seen on the internet.

A note was that I changed what type of dress I decided to make. Originally I was going to make one like in the images from week 3, but I actually found a dress on Pinterest that I liked better, and had a free pattern. I decided to make it black and had pink and yellow bias tape straps as there was not enough pink for the whole project.

Week 10 – April 20th 2023 – Finished sewing together my hoodie and started thinking about my inquiry

This week I finally finished sewing my hoodie together and then I started thinking back and looking at patterns for my inquiry project. A struggle I had was trying to align the cuffs of the hoodie with the sleeves as they are a big difference in size. A success I had was when I figured out how to sew the hood. Next week I hope to get started on my first inquiry.

Now that I finished both the fit me t-shirt and the fit me Hoodie
a) Does your finished garment fit you? Yes my garment fits!
 b) Will you be wearing this garment? If not why not. I will be wearing this garment because I am proud of how it turned out
 C) what is the biggest thing you learned from making this project. The biggest thing I learned while making this project is that you can’t rush it or it will not look good.

Week 9 – April 13th 2023 – Finished my life below water project

This week I finished my life below water project. A struggle I had was remembering all of the hand-sewing stitches. A success that I had was when I figured out the blanket stitch and when I decided how I was going to sew the shell. Next week I hope to work on my hoodie as I didn’t have much time this week.

Life below water

Sea otters are adorable little creatures that are unfortunately being threatened right now because of us. Oil spills, getting caught in nets, pollution, and loss of kelp are only some of the many reasons that this species in currently endangered. Unfortunately, we humans have caused all of these issues.

On the other hand, because we are the ones who have caused these issues, it means that we can solve them. We can stand up and fight against pipelines going through water ways, and we can make fishermen aware of sea otters getting caught in their nets. We can also cleanup any unused and old nets we  see in the water. We can also stop the disappearance of kelp by protesting the commercial harvesting of kelp and the dumping of chemicals in waterways.

Week 8 – April 6th 2023 – Started sewing hoodie and started sewing life below water

This week I sewed the pocket of my hoodie and i started sewing the pieces of my life below water project together. A struggle I had is when I accidentally sewed the head of my animal upside down :(. A success is when i fixed it by adjusting the other pieces so it still worked. I hope to next week finish sewing my animal so i can work on my hoodie more.

Week 7 – March 30th 2023 – Finished shirt, and started hoodie

This week I finished making my fitted shirt for myself and I started cutting out the fabric and pattern for my hoodie.  A struggle I had was figuring out the instructions for the hoodie and what pieces to cut out. A success I had this week was when I figured out how to make my t-shirt fitted and fit well.  Next week I hope to be able to start on my life below water creature.

Week 6 – March 9th 2023 – Finished baby shirt, started my shirt

This week I finished making my baby shirt and sewed the final pieces together I also started making the pattern for my shirt. A struggle i had was ironing the collar since it was round, and also the fabric getting caught until i had to change it to a stretch stitch. A success for me was when everything came together well and  I cut the pattern correctly. Next week I hope to finish my shirt.

Week 5- March 2nd 2023 – Started my baby shirt

This week I started my baby shirt. I cut out the pattern, cut out the fabric, and got the thread ready. Something i struggled with was that my machine kept going over the same spot. We fixed it by making the stitches wider. A success for me was figuring out how to place and cut the patterns in a way that isn’t right in the middle. Next week I hope to finish my shirt.

Week 4 – Feb 23rd 2023 – Helped with drum bag pattern, worked on life below water pattern

This week it was a little shorter, so I didn’t do to much. I did help with making a pattern for the drum bags and I worked on cutting out a pattern and felt pieces for life below water. Something I struggled with was making the patterns as I needed everything to match up perfectly. My biggest success is figuring out how I would sew the overlapping arm, because I had to decide how I would do it and whether or not to stuff it. Next week I want to pick a out a fabric for my inquiry and find a pattern.

Week 3 – Feb 14th 2023 – Machine stitching examples, Starting life below water design, Pillow case, Inquiry project

This week I started making a pattern for my life below water project, I made the pillow case, I did the sewing machine examples, and I did research for my Inquiry project. Something I struggled with was deciding the design and figuring out how I would put together my life below water project. My biggest success was probably figuring out what todo for my Inquiry project. Next week I hope to start working on my inquiry project and life below water more.

Inquiry project

What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?

  • I chose to make this dress as my project. I chose to make this when I saw the first photo (left) on my Pinterest and really liked the style of the dress.  I looked into it more and found some other inspo pictures.
What do you need to get started?
  • I wanted to make this because it is something I will wear a lot during the summer and I think that it is pretty simple to sew. I also have liked this style of dress for a while but didn’t want to purchase it. To get started I will need a pattern, and to find some fabric that I like.
How will you begin the project?
  • I am going to begin by finding a pattern
  • One challenge I might face is finding a good pattern to make this with. In my research I found some online, but they all cost money. I could solve this by either purchasing it, or looking through patterns in class or I have at home to possibly use or I could make my own.

Pillow case

This week I made a pillowcase for my pillow!

Machine sewing examples

This week I worked on making the machine stitch examples. It was good to refresh my memory on how to do some of these and their names.  I also enjoyed doing some of the fancy stitches. I also learned how to use the sergers here which was funny but a little scary at first. I did accidentally flip over my fabric which is why some of the stich examples are a different colour.

Week 2- Feb. 10th 2023 – Hand stitching a pillow, Life below water research, and Sewing machine test

This week and part of last week I learned different stiches to hand sew by making a pillow, I researched different animals and decided on a plan for my life below water project, and studied for my sewing machine test. My biggest struggle was probably figuring out the ladder stitch while making the pillow. My biggest success was definitely doing my blanket stitches which I thought looked pretty even and good or getting 100% on my sewing machine test. My goal for next week is to finish my sewing machine stitch examples and come up with an idea for an inquiry project.

Hand stitching a pillow

This is the process of how I sewed the pillow. I started by doing a baste stitch, Back stitc, and chain stitch and then closed it up with blanket, whip, and slip stitches. I think my favourite to do was probably the chain stitch.

Life below water research

Sea otters are adorable little creatures that are unfortunately threatened right now because of us. Oil spills, getting caught in nets, pollution, and loss of kelp are only some of the many reasons that this species in currently endangered. Unfortunately we humans have caused all of these issues.

We can also cleanup and unused and old nets we sea in the water We can also stop the disappearance of kelp by protesting the commercial harvesting of kelp.

Week 1 – Feb. 1st 2023 – Making an edublog page

We did a scavenger to get to know others, we took pictures of our favourite fabric, go through the curriculum, and we created edublogs. My biggest struggle was probably trying to upload pictures to this blog. My biggest success was figuring out what a croquis is and also my picture finally uploading. To have a good start to the course.
