This quote relates to “The Friday Everything Changed” because the protagonist Ms. Ralston wasn’t anyone powerful or renown but she was able to hold “evil in check” by showing the boys that a girl can hit a home run, a home run so great that the ball landed in the ox pasture. Hitting the ball into the ox pasture happened maybe once a year. (page 11)  A small act showing her talents was able to keep “darkness at bay” by forcing the boys to acknowledge and accept this fact, because now that they saw a girl hit a home run they could not pick on the girls for bringing up the idea that they were equals. Small acts of kindness can be anything from holding the door open for someone coming in to the school carrying lots of bags, standing up to comments regarding someone’s race, religion, or there differences in general, talking to people you would not usually talk to that maybe do not have as many friends, or just doing so much as saying hi. It can also be offering to help when its needed at home, at school or anywhere you maybe which can make someones day or just a plain genuine compliment. Life is made up of small moments and it is usually the smallest gestures that can make someones whole day.  My cousin Sheliza Kassam in Calgary is an ordinary person that is making a huge difference by her acts of kindness globally. She found an organization called “Children’s Birthday Miracle.” or CBM. CBM started when she was 12 and due to an allergy that made her break out into hives when she ate a  piece of her birthday cake. She went to the hospital and told her parents that her birthday was ruined because of her allergies and they told her that she was lucky to have a birthday party because many kids all around the world do not get to have parties. Sheliza decided that for the next couple birthdays she would work at homeless shelters serving breakfast to the less fortunate. On her 16th Birthday she decided that she was going to start a non – profit organization to throw birthday parties for unprivileged children in Canada which now has extended to Peru, Kenya and Tanzania. She said that it is a chance for the kids to be free of stress and give them a chance to spend happy time with their families celebrating their birth. This organization has a pay it forward program which allows kids to donate their own presents too. She is hoping that this will eventually lead to a  chain reaction. I think that this is an excellent example of an ordinary person starting to create change and create some happiness for un privileged children. It started out small, and now it is transpired to something huge and it is inspiring hundreds of children to take small steps to create big changes by donating their own gifts. This act of giving shows that all someone has to do to create a change is donate a gift that they received to someone that needs it more than they want it. Sheliza has really began to create a change in the lives of the unprivileged and has thrown birthday parties to create a long lasting impact on kids by giving them some happy times and at the same time she has opened an avenue for the privileged kids to give back and feel good about their act of kindness.
